Only clam that I know for sure that permanently loses its byssal gland attachment is the gigas -- it atrophies rather than falls off as the clam gets big. At that point it doesn't need it.
I just got a maxima and placed it on the sand bottom... after 2 hours I decided to move it 3 inches to the left so it gets better light...
at this time, I noticed a round tissue with threads on its end lying on the sand where the clam was previously....
I don't think I tore it off as it was only attached to a sandy substrate...
did it slough off then?
I did notice prior to moving the clam that the byssal opening was gaping ... you could see the sand through the intake opening and out of the byssal opening...
was it stressed out in the move? I did drip acclimate for 2 hours and it opened well after I had placed it...
I did notice it sort of cough 2 times after placement... don't know what that was about...
Thanks for your reply as I'm a little freaked out at this time... thinking I just damaged it...
