Sting Rays are beautiful animals. They don't bother anyone unless unreasonably provoked. It takes much less to provoke humans :D

according to NY Times today verbatim

Police have viewed video footage of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's final moments and ruled out that he was intimidating or threatening the stingray that killed him.

Surf Life Saving Queensland has said it is vital not to swim over rays as their barbs can inflict a fatal sting on the trunk of the body.

Irwin died after being stabbed by the ray's barbed tail as he swam over it yesterday during a film shoot on tiger sharks at the Great Barrier Reef.

Authorities say stingrays only flick their barbs upwards in an involuntary reflex action if they feel threatened

so i guess they will "just" attack

Hmm like the police would be an expert on sting ray behavior right?

Then again it remains open to interpretation what constitutes a provocation. Steve was close enough to get stabbed right...?

Don't get me wrong, I do admire Steve's dedication, courage and tremendous love for wildlife. He is a great loss to our wildlife preservation efforts. I will miss watching him doing what he was the best in the world.

R.I.P.
Steven Irwin.
i understand that he took chances with dangerouse animals but that aside a popular man died that was well liked . regardless he was only 40 something....too young too die and that fact we all should all respect and feel sorry for.
