Crosshatch Trigger

Has anyone ever tried one of these in their reef? I am told it is reef safe. I am thinking about trying to find one.

true and not true (?) Mine have never touched a coral clams, or shrimp. but my male ate every chromis in the tank.

i know a couple people that have them and they said the crosshatches are really shy.

I have heard from many people that they mind their manners, but like most things, it depends on the fish. You are always going to hear stories of butterfly fish that never touched a coral, or dwarf angels that ate every coral in the tank. One thing that I have learned is that there are no absolutes, that any fish is capable of doing almost anything. Its all an odds game, odds are in your favor with a crosshatch or bluejaw trigger that it will be behaved. But there are also decent odds that you are going to get one that will try to eat your smaller fish. ESPECIALLY if it is a larger fish. In that case a 7" crosshatch is used to eating fish the size of young chromises in the wild. It sees your school as a buffet of little tidbits that have nowhere to run when compared to the open water areas he WAS hunting.

I disagree with the shy comment. The pair I had were the most personable fish I have ever had and most of the ones I have seen in stores are generally very outgoing.
I do agree that every speciman will have very different personality and eating habits. I could not keep any type of shrimp in my tank for more than a few weeks but the ones I had never bother any fish and I had a very small midas blenny and clown gobies in the tank with them. They did kill a mandarin one time but I think it was due to mistaken identity because it happened early in the morning when the mandarin was sleeping. They are very aggresive eaters and can intimidate and injure other fish on accident during feeding time.

here are mine... they are very shy when it comes to agressive fish ie damsels, clowns etc.. almost like pussycats.. they are very friendly towards people and always come out when i walk in the room, probably because they alwayas want to be feed....

crosshatches dont eat fish in the wild. they are planktivores. I remember that thread of the chomis... weren't they trying to spawn or something?

you will be fine. Most will do well in a reef with all corals and all fish (even gobies etc) keep them fed well with a few feedings a day. A hungry fish becomes a mean fish :)

They are a VERY shy fish to begin with. Over time they will realize that you feed them and become more personable.

i was holding a few, and i actually had to feed and leave the room so they would come out and eat.

Mine were shy for a few months, then very personable. Very good fish IMO. These fish are not for the small tank or budet hobbist.

very true... i think you need at least a 210 to keep them happy...

Bebo77, what do you have in the tank with them? Any shrimp? I have been thinking about these for a while in fact my LFS has a pair but have been extremely reluctant as I cannot get anyone to confirm there cohabitation with cleaner shrimp. Any input would be helpful.

i made a cool little cave for my shrimp an placed him in it when i first put him in the tank.. even if the trigger wanted it the shrimp he could not get him... but that said the cross has not shown any interest in inverts... i do feed him in addition to the regular tank feedings a single 91/110 count shimp every day to keep him happy.

That is encouraging news. I assume the shrimp you are reffering to are the raw frozen kind found at your local grocery store? From what I have read about them they realy are not aggresive towards other fish? I have a school of dipar anthias that I would hate to have become a snack.

I have a chance to grab a male. I was worried about my shrimp and clowns. He has been in the tank he is in now with shrimp and little fish and has never shown an interest. Drew blood on his owner trying to feed him but never bothered the other fish or corals. I just wondered if anyone else had a different experience. Thnaks for all the help!
