Just bought 40lbs of carib live sand and a 16lb bag of crushed coral. Now i was gonna use the crushed coral for a QT. But I was wondering can u have both in 1 tank with live rock? I am stocking up on what i need 1st havent set anything up yet. Slowly but surely. The tank I have is 30 gal. small but i will work my way up eventually when i can afford it. Thanks!

I wouldn't. For best nitrification I would only use the sand in the main display. I would not use a substrate in the QT. I would take the crushed coral back. ;)

double post.

QT's s/b run with a barebottom. Substrates interfere with some medications and a barebottom tank is easier to keep clean which will help with ammonia issues.

Combining crushed coral with a finer substrate in your show tank isn't a great idea. The smaller grained substrate will eventually end up on the bottom and the debris harboring crushed coral will end up on the top.
