I'm curious about what the survival rate is for your newly added crustaceans. I have a couple shrimp and hermits that have been with me for at least a year.
But now when I add peppermint shrimp, they don't last more than a couple weeks and I just added a porcelain crab and I think it just died (1.5weeks). The crab lost one claw a couple days ago, then yesterday it was down to only 3 legs and one leg, no claws.
Today, I saw it in a corner looking like it was trying to molt I think. It had a tiny hind leg somewhat scratching underneath it's shell...I've seen shrimp do this right before dying. Just a moment ago it seems to have given up.
Is this a sign of something...maybe stress while molting?
I notice my 2 shrimp (1fire, 1 skunk) are bullies to new shrimp. Water params are within range... a little low side on alk.
I use Dowflake and arm and hammer.
Is it a mystery? Is my system just not stable enough for newcomers being that I'm a daily 2 part doser? experience? Encouragement? Are porcelains that difficult?
