CT Frag Farmer's Market 2010!

Jon from the E.O. Smith Coral Project here! As many of you know I have organized and run the Frag Farmer's Market up at the school for the past few years and here is the information for the FFM for this coming spring. The market is not a "meeting" of any group per se, but rather a chance for reefers to get together and sell/buy aquacultured frags. My motivation for running it is two-fold. 1. All the "buy in" funds go directly to fund the 1200+ gallons of salt water I maintain at the school so kids can do work on coral aquaculture. 2. I started the whole project at the school because I feel like it is our responsibility as reefers to make sure that the hobby becomes self sustaining. I feel that aquaculture is going to be key. The FFM offers a venue for people to stock their tanks with aquacultured corals and encourages hobbyists to frags thier stuff and make it available to other reefers. I digress...

Last year's FFM was AWESOME in terms of the corals that people brought and the number of people who came to look and buy. We had people from all over New England come and this year already looks to be bigger. It is a great chance to make a few $ for your Reefing Habit (it is not a hobby...) or a chance to get some VERY nice home grown frags for very reasonable prices. We had everything from mushrooms and zoas to high end SPS and LPS. I have been farming for the last few months myself and have some nice stuff I have never sold pieces of!
If you would like to sign up to sell your stuff, let me know. I am doing the same deal as last time, $25 donation to the school project to set up a tank. I will provide counter space, a powerstrip and heated water if you need it. I also have a few tanks (10's, 15's and 20's) that people are welcome to use but it is first paid in get dibs on them. You can pay me at the CTARS meetings (I'll try to make the next few), I may try to come down for one of your meetings in the next few months, or via Paypal at swansonjl@hotmail.com. If you have questions about the FFM, or just want to chat, feel free to PM me or post Q's here.
I have also decided to do a "special" to get a better grip on who will be setting up tanks. If you sign up and pay by the end of this month (December), I will throw in 20 free specimen cups for you to use that day. (I should also have more around if you need to get some.)
Thanks and happy farming!
Jon

This is a great event for the hobby and supports a good cause. How many people are planning to go. I know there was talk of people setting up an ARK table/tank, still interested? Carpools?

Update!
I just got word that Greg Hiller and Ultimate Corals will be at the FFM this year. Both bring along some sweet higher end frags!

Only a month away! Looking forward to meeting some of you guys when you come up for the market. It will definitely be bigger than last year with over 20 "farmers" already signed up and I always get a rush the last few weeks as people's calendars open up. Plenty of sweet deals on nice frags to be had, and a few other items as well (tank bred bangaiis, sea horses, etc...)

I have been sticking pictures of some of the stuff I will have at the meeting in the CTARS forum and I thought I would share here as well. Just to clarify, these are not for sale...yet!

If the weather doesn't get too bad, I may take a drive after my sons Soccer class. Wouldn't get there till around 1:30 ish. Wife just gave me the blessing to go. Hopefully it won't be picked over by the time I get there :)

Just got done dipping and placing everything. Picked up a clam, dendro, some purple deaths, and more. Got there a around 1 but thats ok, wasn't really looking to score anything rare. IMO was a good frag swap but geared towards sps and rare stuff, don't get me wrong there was something for eveyone, just feel it was sps dominated. All in all I was happy I decided to take the trip in this downpour.

One of the vendors I have to mention that had an amazing display was Reef Creations out of NY. Their setup and frags were top notch. I will have to take a trip down to the city and 2 must stops are reef creations and unique corals who also had some great frags.

Great seeing some other people in the club that decided to take the trip.

Missed the event, doh rare SPS would have been right up my alley...Hopefully CMAC will have some good stuff & deals.

It was quite a drive, heavy rain, Merrit closed because of a fallen tree... but it was worth it to me as I found lot of good looking frags at a decent price to fill my almost empty tank.
Got some acans, acros, montipora, pocilopora, chalice and one SPS which I can't remember the name. I will post a photo of it.
As Jeff said, there was a lot of SPS for sale. I arrived at 1:30 so I might have missed the nicest / rarest frags.

Yes, the drive was terrible, but I picked up a bunch of stuff. Duncan, dendro, acans, and a bunch of zoa's. Grabbed this one zoa with that has a grayish blue center, yellow eye, and longer yellow skirt...looks really cool. You all may want a piece of it when it grows out more. I'd say it was a pretty good event. Not sure what I was expecting for my first frag swap, but am glad I went.
