CT Frag Farmer's Market 3/5/16

It's back!

Once again, the Edwin O. Smith High School Coral Project will be hosting the New England Frag Farmer's Market. This is the 9th year of the FFM it looks to be bigger and better than last year. It is the biggest swap in the Northeast, with 50+ sellers, TONS of frags for sale at great prices, and a great raffle. I have most of the sellers back from previous years (all the big names!) and a few new names to bring their coral "crop" for sale. I do have room for a few more "farmers" if anyone is interested- just get in touch.

I am also adding fragging demos that will go on during the day, given by an All-star bunch of fragging legends- more info to come!

Admission is only $5 this year again, and most of it goes to the scholarship I started last year. I gave $500 to two graduating seniors from E.O. Smith who were going on to study marine biology or some other ocean/conservation related field. Hoping to double that this year!
It is always a great time and once people come out once, they always come back the following year.

I will post more details as things come together.
Hope to see you all this coming March!

Jon

I just got word that Caribsea will once again be sponsoring the Frag Farmer's Market again by supplying all of the water for the "farmers." They have been, and continue to be, supporters of the school project and the Frag Farmers Market so a HUGE thank you to Betsey and everyone else at Caribsea!

Go Carib-Sea!

Just building my first real (I hope!) reef setup, and first venture into salt-water aquarium keeping since the '80s, and it sounds like I ought to be squirreling away dollars and a day off to attend this event! (Now ... if I can get my biofilter built up to full-strength by March . . . )

Welcome back! You should look into the two clubs in CT if you are getting back in. ARKSWC does a nice job is the SW corner of the state and CTARS covers the rest. You can make some great connections and learn a ton from the members, as well as here on RC!
Get yourself ready for March and head out to the Frag Farmer's for sure. You won't be disappointed. It has gotten HUGE and you will find pretty much any coral you are looking for from the very common to the "I've never seen that before" Imagine going to 50+ different stores all a single hallway.

Big news for the FFM this year. I am going to be expanding into three new rooms! That should spread some of the traffic around for the 800+ people that come out every year! I have a few other big announcements that I will leak in the next few weeks!

Here is the "preliminary list" of sellers for the FFM so far. I apologize for any of the names/locations that are not completely correct - feel free to shoot me a PM to fix if needed. This list does not include any of the "I want to sell but have not paid in people" If you think you should be on here and are not - please let me know! I do still have room for a few more, if anyone wants in but hustle - I have more people who have said they want to sell than I have spaces left...
Thanks-
Jon

For people traveling from outside the local area who would like to stay the night. The Frag Farmer's Market has a discounted rate with the Best Western in Mansfield CT (5 minutes down the road from the school). When you call to make a reservation, just let them know you are with the Frag Farmer's Market and you get the discounted rate (~$100/night).

Absolutely can't wait. I've been looking forward to this for over a year. Last year I didn't have proper lighting for corals now I'm good to go and looking to finish filling my tank up :)

I also got word that Logan from Reefbreeders is donating one of the BRAND NEW Jaebo Gyre style pumps to the raffle. They are not in the US yet (I don't think...) and he will be one of the first to get his hands on them. This will be most people's first chance to see one, and someone's chance to take one home!

Thanks to Logan and Reefbreeders for hooking us up on this one!

This year's Frag Farmer's Market will also include the newest incarnation of
Justin Credible
He will be selling and also running a few fragging demos during the day.

Review from ************:

December 30 2015, Brian Blank –
Maxspect is keeping up the pressure on making sure Jebao gets the message to stop infringing on other company’s designs and patents. On Tuesday, Maxspect shared an email they posted online sending a warning to Jebao about using the company’s patent-pending design of its Gyre pumps.

The post states they are taking note to the Jebao Cross Flow pumps — Jecod CP-25 and CP-45 — seem to infringe on Maxspect’s pending patent application. The post goes further to note that “Maxspect is putting everyone on notice that theft of their intellectual property will not be tolerated and by ignoring this warning you may be liable for damages.”

Although we feel for Maxspect and other manufacturers that have their designs “borrowed”, there may not be too much that can be done at this point. According to U.S. patent law, pending patents cannot a person or entity that files a patent application on an invention has patent pending status until a patent issues or the application is abandoned. This isn’t a slam dunk that the U.S. Patent Office will actually grant the patent as it can be rejected for many reasons.

There are provisional rights for royalties and potential damages, however there are many requirements that need to be met. The notice letter sent may be effective to get Jebao to cease importation or engage in a discussion to agree on licensing fees, but we will most likely see Jebao ignore it and import these pumps. If and when the patent is issued, there might be another chapter to this story, but until then we may see more of these types of pumps on the market.

See the entire email sent to Jebao below:

It was interesting to note at the bottom of the product page it also says "Shipping: Can send to Worldwide except USA"

Jebao is currently in litigation with Hydor over their RW series for patent infringement. They had cease and desist notifications from Tunze over patent infringement and now are facing litigication from Maxspect over their Gyre knock off. It's a shame that people support and reward companies by lining the pockets of companies who steal designs of other companies by knocking off products. The WP series was quickly end of lifed due to infringing on Tunze's designs, the Gyre knockoff is currently prohibited from being shipped to the states and the RW series will be next due to the Hydor complaint. Certainly not the signs of an innovative or trustworthy company.

Wow, thanks for the legal lesson...
I try not to get involved in the legal aspects of all of this and was just sharing information that one of my vendors had shared with me. Logan is a great guy and has been very generous with his donations and help to my school project. I would hate to see it become a black mark on him, or his company that he offered to donate something.
