CUC Critters

Just throw things in there your fish won't bother (or vice versa) until there isn't enough food to support them.

Your sand sifters depend on the depth of your sandbed. Your algea eaters depend on the ammount of algea for them, etc.

How far along is the cycle? Any algae yet? You don't want to throw a bunch of clean up crew in unless you can feed them. I would probably get a couple of Nassarius snails if you are feeding the tank because they will eat the excess foods. Shrimp can be good for clean up too. I like hermit crabs too for that. Trochus, Turbo and Cerith Snails are all good for algae if you have any growing.

I have been having algae, I was running my lights too long. Im running my light 8 hours (t5's) and it has been better. I might go down 1 more hour to run it 7 hours a day. And my leds moonlight is on about 15 hours a day.

I love all the variety you can get in a clean up crew. Hermit crabs will pick at the algae a bit, snails will eat it too, but quite often the hermit crabs will get the snails and kill them for their shells, or just for the heck of it. I'd stay away from Astrea snails as they did not last long with my hermit crabs. Trochus and Ceriths will last much longer. I've never had turbos, but I hear they do a great job on algae. The lights are probably part of the problem, but feeding can add alot of nutrients to the tank too if you're feeding too much.

What types of fish do you have? In my 75g fowlr I've currebtly got a melanarus wrasse, a coral beauty angelfish, a yasha goby (paired with a pistol shrimp), a black and white clownfish, and a copperband butterfly. With them I can put all sorts of stuff, and if you have fish like them you can as well. I've got conchs, cerith snails, trochus snails, nasasourus snails, astrea snails (breeding themselves in the tank right now), at least 6 different hermit crab species, 2 fire shrimp, 2 longspine urchins, 1 pencil urchin, 1 chocolate chip starfish, 1 African starfish, 1 arrow crab, a few emerald crabs, a horseshoe crab, and another crab I've blanked out on and can't remember the name, and more. For my reef tank a whole other set! You can get creative and don't be to shy, if you don't have corals there's not a lot to be worried about; they won't harm your fish, just make sure your fish don't harm them (fish like triggers and puffers will do some serious damage to a CC). Most fish are fine with them though. Take advantage of them, they really liven up your tank more than you could ever imagine!

If you have a dsb you cant go wrong with a tiger tail cucumber. They will stir the sand around nicely and wont eat any beneficial fauna in it... we also have a tuxedo urchin that does some serious damage on all algae besides cyano but as with turbo snails glue your frags down! Ours is carrying a little piece of gsp on it and its actually growing! Lol

A cucumber is the best thing to help keep your sand bed clean IMHO. I have 2 in my 72g and they keep it looking rather nice.
