culturing phytoplankton

Am thinking about getting 1 or 2 clams and am considering culturing phytoplankton for them. What kind of phyto is best for clams and has anyone had any problems adding fertilized culture water to their tanks? I don't think they make sieves small enough for phyto plankton. please advise if I'm wrong. Thanks in advance.

I make nannochloropsis (spelling is probably wrong).

Only downside to adding it is that you are adding more nutrient to the tank. You will get a little bit of a spike for a while, but it will settle down.

If you smell the phyto and it makes you want to puke, then it is dead and don't add it.

Greetings All !

moumda,

RC's "The Fish Breeding Forum" has a great microfood culture thread. It's:

"... has anyone had any problems adding fertilized culture water to their tanks?"

Oh yeah ... timing is everything. What you're looking for is the point at which the phytoplankton culture has consumed the available nutrients in the culture water. Information on how to assess this is in "Plankton Culture Manual, 5th Edition" (Hoff & Snell, 1987).

"I don't think they make sieves small enough for phyto plankton."

Aquatic Ecosystems in Florida (http://www.aquaticeco.com) sells mesh down to 1 micron (... although draining particulate suspensions through a 1 micron sieve is a time consuming pain ...). They also have a full range of culturing goodies and toys. Pretty good free technical assistance as well ... .

HTH.
