cupramine and prime

I was tossing between various methods to treat ich. However, tonight all my fish show white spots now so I have decided to go for cupramine treatment. I read that cupramine and prime combination is deadly. However, without using prime how do you remove chlorine from the water? What if I only use correct dose of prime would it still be toxic?

Combining the two is deadly. Use RO/DI water to avoid chlorine.

Unfortunately I wont be able to buy a RO unit immediately due to budget constraints. If I use correct dose prime and leave it for 48 hours before I add cupramine, then would it be safe?

Skip the prime and use distilled water if your HT tank is not that large.

The chlorine is not the issue.

If your (large) city uses chloramine to disinfect the water, then many other water conditions will yield ammonia as the chloramine is broken down. If your city uses straight chlorine, then ammonia will not be generated.

But the critical source of ammonia is from livestock no matter.

Thanks all for your info. I also read it jn this forum that if I let water to age after 48 hours adding prime then components of prime will be gone and then it is safe to use with cupramine. One post here even had a link from seachem forums. Is it true? Have anyone done that before?

Just bought a PSI RO unit day. However, I am thinking given my display tank is infected anyway so perhaps I should take all live rocks out and keep fish in display tank for hyposalinity treatment instead. Then put back all live rocks in after 72 days. Would you think this will be a better approach than take fish out for cupramine treatment in QT, and keep DT fishless for 72 days?

Hyposalinity is difficult to implement successfully and even if you do everything right, hypo resistant strains of ich have been proven to exist.

I understand what you are saying Humblefish. However I dont trust myself wake up in the morning to do tank transfer method. Every morning is already a rush for me to get to work. I am also afraid that cupramine may be too strong for my king and asfur angels. While all fish still eat and appears healthy so I thought hyposalinity method is the least stress way to deal with ich.

BTW polyplab medic DO NOT work.

And FWIW; tank transfer doesn't have to be done in the morning. It can be done in the afternoon, evening, midnight, whenever - so long as 72 hrs are not exceeded between transfers.

I agree with tank transfer. It is easy and safe for the fish. Just have the next tank ready to go for the next day. Like said above it doesn't have to be in the morning. Just every 72hrs.
