Curing dry rock in empty display tank

Getting ready to set up my tank and was wondering if I could cure my dry rock in my empty display tank. I am using BRS Pukani and rinsed it quite a bit and pulled all the dead stuff of I could find. Then let it soak in fresh rodi just to try to wash away the junk. I am not really in a rush or anything so would not mind it sitting in there a few weeks, or is it better to start in some Rubbermaid tanks outside?

I did exactly what you are planning on doing and if I were to do it again, I would put them in the Rubbermaid tubs.

The smell from the curing pukani is terrible and filled up the whole house for about a week and a half.

Hmmm that is a good point. The wife would probably not be to happy with that.

Being that you started out with dry rock and have already rinsed it thoroughly, I would definitely use the DT.

The biggest down side to using the DT is that the water will most like turn yellow and that yellow will not go away until it has been 100% changed. Depending on how big your DT is this could result in a lot of unneeded waste water.

I don't think the OP will be cycling the tank with the rock. He is just curing the rock. So they don't have to fill the tank the top, just enough to cover the cover.

That was what I was going for. Though its a 125 gallon and just half filled would still be a lot of water to change so I should just do it outside.

I'm assuming your doing this to purge the rock of Phosphates? If so, let me know if your tank happens to bypass the "Uglies." You might be working too hard.

So, do you clean the rock with muratic acid and water . Then rinse. Then can you just add bacteria and plankton and copepods to jump start the cycle? Sound right?
