Curing Live Rock

Good morning,

We would love to hear how you have gone about the process of curing live rock. We will be curing 90lbs in the next few weeks (for the first time) and we would love some insight.

Thank you so much!

When I seeded my rock, I had a good piece full of coraline, and i scraped it and placed it in front of a powerhead to help seed it through the rest of the rock.

I think mostly everyone else has it covered. Most use a trash can, tub, or tank. Whatever you have available is good. Just make sure it is clean first then put it in saltwater to cure. Keep flow and temp on it. Change water just like you would a display to keep your params in line and once your levels of ammonia start shifting to nitrates you are in the right direction. And once you find that you don't have any detectable levels of ammonia and nitrates and nitrites then all is well and it is ready to be used.

I am on day 5 of curing 50 pounds of live rock in my NEW 75g tank. It came with a musty odor and stunk up the room so I decided to try and speed up the process. Yes I probably wasted a little money and would have been better off starting out with fully cured rock from my lfs.

The water had been in the tank for about 3-4 days and up to temp. The water clouded up pretty good and the skimmer went crazy because I think it was still breaking in as well.

I'm curing it with the lights on. I know I've heard not to but then how does the beneficial stuff stay alive?

I also purchased a Fluval 405 canister which is running carbon and biomax. I had a leftover penguin power filter which I am running carbon and phosphate sponge.

I've also done one 20% water change yesterday and plan to do another one next week. All together I have probably 1500gph flowing.

The water now is crystal clear in 3-4 days.

I will be waiting a few more weeks to add any clean-up crew critters.

Just thought I'd share what I did. I'll probably pay dearly for not following the typical steps but I had to do something. We could barely stand to be in the room it stunk so bad. I thought about tearing the tank down to start over.

I'll keep you posted. Also, if someone can tell me where I went wrong and what to expect would be good to know. So far the stink is either not as strong or we all have odor fatigue.

Good luck....and wish me luck.
