curing live rock

I am starting to cure live rock.. I've read and seen people cure with a protien skimmer, but I don't have an extra one.. how important is this? are frequent water changes, say 50% or so every few days sufficient?

Yes - water changes - don't worry about skimming. You just want to do enough water changes so the ammonia nitrite and nitrate does not get high enough to kill off the beneficial organisms in the rock. That is the function of the water changes.
