Curing Pukani

If your just trying to clear nitrates, larger changes are more efficient. You can do like 80% every other day. Just 25% each week won't do much at all, and with smaller changes you're always removing some of the clean water you added last time. So it's not like you're doing 100% in 4 weeks, more like 68%. That's a reduction from 10ppm to 4.5 over a whole month assuming no more nitrates are being added.

My experience with three different pieces of pukani has been the same. I acid bath cured each piece to remove organics which resulted in a nice pure white piece of rock that went in the tank.

In a few weeks the rock was absolutely covered in hair algae, it was really ugly!

But a few weeks afterwards the CC had done their job and the hair algae receeds back being barely visible.

I believe that the rock has a certain amount of readily available phosphates that promote the hair algae growth but that phosphate supply is somewhat easily depleted in the presence of gfo.

So after 7.5 weeks curing in the basement, I decided to go ahead and get the DT up and running. I just could not wait any longer. It's been just over a week and some GHA has started to bloom but you have to look pretty hard to see it. The Red Sea Reef Mature Kit is awesome. NH3:0 NO2:0 NO3:10 on day 7. The NOPOX seems to be working well as NO3 was well over 20 just a few days earlier. I think the rock turned out looking great I cant wait to see some life in this tank.
