current legislation regarding reef import/export..

just reading on the MARS forum for a quick bit, ran across this thread from mrmikeb..

i know i'm torn also between both principles of 1) eco-conservation of the amazing natural environments that we try to artifically recreate and enjoy so much, and 2) believing that part of this hobby is based on making opportunities to create that sense of wonder and appreciation for another world in the ocean to new generations of people (maybe because i'm a life science teacher.. :) ) through displays such as reef tanks..

i know seeing amazing fish and terrarium tanks, especially outside of museums and public aquariums (that i didn't get a chance to go to much as a kid) in schools and other peoples homes, is a main part of what sparked my interest in animals/biology/etc..

wondering if anyone knows anything more about this and/or has an opinion wants to chime in, maybe we can start a discussion on this thread as well?

mrmikeb:

Current legislation
As an active SANE reef conservationist and a fellow enthusiast I pay particular attention to the current rumblings in our legislative branch regarding the future of our hobby. I thought you all would be interested in the following concerning HR4928 introduced a couple months ago by a Congressman of Hawaii:

Given I know most of you on here personally, I wanted to open a local dialog to discuss your thoughts on this. I think it fair to suggest it being an almost inevitable conclusion that regulatory control and outright banning of coral and other marine life importation is close at hand. Closer than we might all think.

Join the fray and let it out!
