Well I've been meaning to get around to this journal for quite some time now, but I didn't so it's time to catch up! I started in this hobby back in 2010 and the whole chronicle was documented over in the Nano Tank forums right here on RC. I came up with the idea many years ago that I'd like to eventually build out two custom aquariums, which while matching exactly externally, would be vastly different on the inside. One tank would house a planted freshwater biotope, and the other an SPS dominant reef. Both of these systems would be on opposing sides of the same room of the house to create an awesome natural dichotomy that, in my head at least, would be fascinating to sit in the middle of and observe.
Well the purchase of a new house late last year presented the perfect opportunity to bring the idea to life. Some changes were driven by design needs, and some by further experience in the hobby since my original concept, but the core concept remained intact.
The main change on the reef was to move away from SPS dominant. While gorgeous, challenging, and fun, my years of experience with that made me switch to a "keep it simple stupid" system because I wanted it to be easy to care for and sustainable long term. This means minimal equipment, minimal water changes, and easier to keep corals.
I will spend a few days retrospectively covering the build from it's start in December 2017 and catch up to present day, then plan to maintain regular updates. Feel free to post any questions or comments you may have along the way!
The tanks as they stand in August.
More to come soon!
