Custom Glass Tank Builders

Persistant Perspective
I just got a quote from a LFS that I have purchased from for a custom 52 glass gal tank. Nothing to fancy, just shallow and no braces. Like a top down clam tank or a frag tank. Price came in at $1500. I almost spit up my lunch. I could buy a 180 gal out the door with stand for that. Just for a note, glass cages has a tank that is very close (bigger) for under $200. The one slightly shallower, $100. I was expecting something under $500 for a local purchase. Maybe $600.

Anyone else have a better contact? If not, I am building it myself. I don't think I want to deal with Glass Cages as I have never spoken to them. Shipping seams like a hassle.

i got a quote from leemar
$2500 for a 36 x 20 x 22" tank, no bracing, no trim, polished edges and 3 sides starphire with external overflow.

then i got a quote from socalcreations for an acrylic tank, same dimensions, rounded and polished lip, rounded front corners, 1.5" thick spartech polycast acrylic, with a custom 36" tall stand, and a custom sump w/ refugium for $1025 total.

sure starphire is nice, but wow it's expensive.

No, this is regular glass here folks. Called gass cages, $170 plus shipping. I can meet them in LA for $50 (december 8th.:( )

1.5" thick spartech polycast acrylic

Damn Art, that is thick! Is it because it has no bracing? Which LFS did you get the quote for the Leemar? Also is the $1025 shipped or before shipping?

Anyone got another contact to call. I would prefer to buy locally.
I guess I could buy it and brag about having a $1500 sump!!

Vern:
LeeMar quote was from Mermaid
$1025 + $270 shipping for the socal tank/stand/sump
1.5" because of the no bracing. He said 1" would work, but said 1.5" to be super redudantly safe (that's why i like randy, he's all about quality and safety).

Qwiv:
I think there's one other local named Long Hyung, but I can't find the thread with his phone #. ask on MARS forum or lbear on BAR

It was a 4 gallon tank with 1" thick spartech polycast acrylic, eurobraced!! You could shoot that tank into space and it'd still be ok. Reason for being so thick was it used spare acrylic from my 82g tank =P

So, if a 36 x 20 x 22 requires a 1.5" thickness of spartech polycast acrylic, what thickness would it be used for a 96x30x30?

When I was in Boston, a friend got a 125 tall from glass cages with overflows and holes drilled for a closed loop. He loved it. I moved out here after he had had it for about six months, but I could check in again if you'd like. Glass cages had a good reputation in the Boston Reefers Society.

Long is about to make my 150 gal starphire glass tank. Don't bother him before my tank is done. :D Just kidding. Call him at (510)714-1128. I visited him couple of weeks ago and saw his glass work. I'd say it's pretty good! He lives in Elk Grove.

I'll give him a call. I really wanted to support a lfs, but 10x the cost is nuts. Makes me wonder if I want to go back there again.
