This is replacing an existing shrimp/goby tank that has been up about 6 months. About a month ago the goby jumped through the eggcrate
. This tank should be pretty much jump proof. Under the eggcrate is a fine plastic mesh I got at a craft shop.
Right now I'm looking for the right stand, want one with a glass top. The base is designed so I can slide a piece of black paper under the tank and remove it to check out the tunnel system that the shrimp creates in the substrate.

There is no filtration on the tank. There is room for a bag of carbon in the overflow.
Based on this article,Water Changes in Reef Aquaria I'm doing daily waterchanges of 16 oz. That's about 2.5% of actual water in the tank and only takes a couple of minutes/day.
This is all that's in the overflow, had to remove the spray nozzles and add another 45 degree pvc elbow because flow was too intense.

Very cool.
Gotta love the versatility of this hobby. I swear over the last 4 years my tanks have gotten simpler and simpler and at the same time healthier and healthier. It just goes to show you that a good understanding of the ecosystem and the chemistry involved is far more beneficial than the latest greatest equipment. Don't get me wrong though I love technology!!!

Excellant Article. Daily waters changes could eliminate the need for Ca/Alk supplements and create a more stabe enviroment for the corals in an aqaurium setting. I would imagine once you go above 20g the daily water changes would become a little more like work. But the benefits could outweigh the inconvience.
Time to do some calculating to see how much water I need each week compared to what actually use currently.

An update........
The light was too close without enough airflow , the temp spiked to 90 degrees and fried the Galaxea. The xenia and trumpet made it 
. The light is now raised 1.5" and temp is stable.
Daily water changes are a bother but IMO worth it. The rock was well cured but the substrate was all new. I haven't had the usual diatom bloom and there's no nuisance algae.
Downgraded the return pump from a Rio 600 to a Rio 200. The remaining corals appreciate the lower flow and I suspect the pump change is helping maintain a lower temp.
