Cutting 1/2" thick glass.

i dont see why a cheap skill saw wouldn't work just make sure it is plugged into a gfci outlet and use a commonly available dimond blade

just rember you are grinding through the glass not actualy cutting it

You could even do it with a dremel and a tile cutting bit. This is 1/2" glass that I cut this way. What would be the difference? You just have to cut all the way instead of stopping like I did.

I don't like using dremels. I haven't seen a good enough guide to get a clean cut with. Every edge or imperfection to me is an opportunity for a crack in the tank. Is there a carbide tipped router bit that can cut through glass?

Coralfagger, is that a 150 gallon tank?

coralfagger.. I would rond those corners a bit more and lose the center post. I am afraid it may add a stress point.

Too late now. I did realize (after the fact) that I should have rounded the corners. The are completely straight now. This tank has been up and running now for over a year with no problems.

Since the cuts are at the very top where actually no water is I don't think there is much stress there. That and the fact that the eurbrace is silicone on top which puts a stationary glue point right next to the cuts (so it isn't going anywhere). I think it will be fine.

If I had to do it over, I would definately round the corners but would probably still leave the center piece.

Looks like silestone if I had to guess, but what the heck do I know? Don't you have to be concerned about whether the glass is tempered or not?
