Cutting frozen food

if your cutting up the small cubes, i thaw them then mash with a fork. Sometimes i just drop the cube in and let the fish pick at it

I use a small paring knife and a cutting board. If I hack off to much I put the extra back in the freezer. I bought some small dixie cups and I drop little chucks of frozen food in water from the tank and let it melt while I maintain, by then it's thawed and I pour it in slowly. This way I keep my hands out of the water. I think the dixie cups are 4 ounces, very small.

on second thought.....

on second thought.....

I was a chef for 15 years and something we did with frozen food was let it thaw a little and then cut it. Put the food in the fridge for a couple of hours and cut it while it was still icy but soft enough to safely cut. When you hack off what you need refreeze the the left over.

I must be really slack........I push a cube out of the container and throw it in the microwave for 10 seconds then cut it and throw half back in the freezer then the rest I feed the fish.

I guess I figure if I could use the microwave on thawing my food then it is safe for the fish to. :)

My easiest experience has been when I was cutting it, after it had thawed a bit. I saw a knife on TV (available only on TV) that looked like it would saw through the frozen food. The knife/saw actually would saw through bricks. This is what I want to buy. Has anybody seen the commercial that I am talking about? Do you remember the name of the item?
I found it. It is called the MXZ saw. This baby looks like it will cut through frozen food with no problem.

Are you asking about a sheet of frozen fish food or cubes? I buy the big sheets of Mysid. I take the whole sheet out of the freezer, place it on a board (like a 1 x 4), let about 3/4" - 1" hang off the edge, and just push down. It snaps right off. I keep doing that, and then take those strips and break them off. I end up with various size pieces, but most of them are about 3/4" x 3/4". I put all of that into 2 separate Freezer zip-lock bags. I also add Garlic and this is a good time to add it, one time, to all the food.

By-the-way, I'm no chef but I know it is not a good idea to freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw food.

Yes that is how I do my Mysis to as it is fairly flat, and I do break mine off too. Also I hate running a mini fridge just to thaw out food. I like to cut up my food frozen, and many times I let it thaw completely after that. The chunks stay pretty solid even when thawed. Cutting it up is important to me, so that I can put some back into the freezer before thawing. This food is homemade.

I cut my frozen cube into half and I let it thaw and then I rinise it off to remove the packer's water (Their water is dirty) then I feed it to my livestocks.

I use a knife cut a little bit off then i take a turkey baster suck some water out of my tank put in the cup mix it around untill its thaws suck it back up with the baster and put it in the tank. My hands never touch the water or the fish food!

If you thaw your frozen food to make it easier to cut, just make sure you don't thaw it all the way. Constantly thawing and refreezing food will leach out the nutrients. I like the hammer method. If the chunks are a little to big for one feeding, I still thaw the whole thing and keep the extra in the fridge to feed the fish the next day.

I dug up a brand new, old style frozen food knife. You should see this thing. It doesn't even feel like it is cutting through the frozen food, but after just a few swipes I am through it.
