Cutting off lobo frag?

Hey so I just got this lobo frag (one of my first 4 frags) my question is can I cut off the actual lobo from the white base? The huge tall "œbase" or "œskeleton" or what ever it is makes it hard to place it in the tank.

As long as you are a 1/2" or so below the flesh, correct? I need to cut mine too.
