CVRC Chain Coral Ideas

If we go Softies I'd go the Zoa/Paly route: 1. Grateful Deads, 2.Rastas (you forget phljess?) and 3. Safecrackers

If we go SPS: 1. "Yellow Stinger" A. Suharsonai (My Fav. SPS ATM),
2. " ATL Banana Deepwater Table" A. Caroliniana (I'm starting to feel sweaty) and just to show that not all things 100.00 and inch are beautiful 3. A. Simplex (grow one out and you will see). I picked deepwater because they are some of my favs, very underappreciated although gaining quite a bit in popularity of late, not commonly kept and finally, they truly can deal with varied lighting which I think makes them ideal for the chain.

Now here is were I will once again get myself into hot water. If we go LPS I think: 1. a true Aussie Purple Tip Elegance. They ARE living and people ARE fragging them... believe it. Everyone should have one. It is one of my biggest pains in this hobby fast forwarding 15 years like this to see something that everyone used to keep with ease to go south so badly. I think it would really be quite something for us all to have Elegance in our tanks again.... check out ATL's. I believe that would make a statement in regards to our goal of captive propagation. That is why it is the only LPS pick that I have.....

no no... the orange envy. All I can find is a thread about someone charging 600.00 a polyp for them. I wondered what a 600.00 paly/zoa looked like;)

If we are going to go the zoa route then tubs blue, or atl blues or lps those dang Australian ducans.

had is the key word both mine and the one i gave to ron went the route of the dodo bird.

Interestingly enough both when south on the same schedule too.

Yes the duncans were a failed attempt, we will do that again soon Chuck.

Good ideas for the candidates but lets have some more to choose from everyone.

Rare Ausie Acans?

Hey Ron. Can you suggest a website with pics of the rarest and colorful of corals??? I still want a piece of Superman Monti, but don't know how "rare" that is. I know it is in the area.

I know for my tank, rare is not so much the goal as colorful. Greens and purples are pretty common. (can't forget brown) I love the pics of the TOTM's with colors that knock your eyes out. I want people to look at pics of my tank and say "That's photoshopped!"

I'd also like to recommend that instead of just a name of a coral posted in this thread, post a pic to go along with it. I know most of the basics corals, but there are some reading here that don't.

I saw a really cool looking "LSU Tigers" monti on ebay today that is orange with bluish purple polyps.

Lee-Bay: Great idea, I suggest Atlantis Aquariums myself as I have dealt with them many times and not been disappointed. They are small frags though but in time they are true to what you see.

I think a good idea would be to maybe get a frag pack of aussie acans Ron. They grow out at a decent rate, having a pack of them we could distribute them out faster due to exponential growth and we can show that this idea can work. I mean, if we get 1 slow growing frag it is going to be a year till we get to stage 2 and distribute to the first 5. I have seen some very nice packs of 8 and 10 go for a nominal amount. Definately do-able.

AppleBerry

AppleBerry

This looks pretty cool even though it is green.

We can expect at least a six month wait between grow outs on about any of these IMO except say, some softies like a "Tyree LE Green Sarcophyton".

Also nothing against any ideas here but I really don't want to get a large coral and hack it up this is not what the program will really be about. Other clubs do indeed buy large acans with each member paying about $50 for his "slice" However the survival rate of some of these frags is low. We want healthy frags, agreed, nothing is 100% fool proof but with each recipient adding to the coral log we will be developing a detailed care regimen for each coral.

Lets get some ideas from everyone here. The faster this list grows the faster we can get started.
