Cyanobacteria,The Red Death and how to deal wiyh it

Dan

Just an update, i actually lowered my alk to 7.5-8.0 for two weeks, kept my temp steady ( lower) from 79 to 76.2 , heavy skimmed, changed bags every two days manually scrubbed and removed, changed my phosban and carbon bi-weely(halves) and ncreased random flow..i am keeping my temps at 76.2 still because my corals look realy heathy with very long P.E and sowly bumped my alk back up to 9-9.2 where i usuallly keept it. I did have some small coral loss due to cyano( mostly dead edges on caps) and some of my sticks took a sight hit to the tips but i think that was more me playing with alk than cyano. they are already coming back . I still have some red slime, but knock on wood it heavily decreased and continues to do so...

Awesome. If you are not loosing, you are winning lol.Have you vacuumed your sump lately.I have found that the particulates that settle there can be a nutrient bank and feed this also.If you have not cleaned your sump right to the glass in the last year or so I would do it.It breathes new life in tanks that have been set up for a good long while.Keep any rock or algae from sump in sea water to keep the bio filter loss to a minimum and clean sweep the sump. And now that you are starting to win the battle, some extra snails and a few more cleaners may be in order.GL bro
