cyanobacteria

you got it. I just checked the ingrediants and your right. So how do I know how much baking soda to add to my tank? It's a 29 gallon tank. Any special brand you use?

Find out why your getting it. Weather it's too much feeding or lack of maintenance. Then use chemi clean works amazing . Just make sure i you the water change after

Thanks for the information on the links listed above, i intend to use them frequently. I'm headed in the right direction. So any supplement that contains borate I should stay away from? because it might effect my test results?

I would say that the overwhelming majority would say yes, except its not "might", it definitely affects them every time.

I don't want to confuse you on the next part, but if you go to BulkReefsupply.com, they will have all the ingredients, but without the specific brand names that Randy uses. I say this because with a smaller tank its just a lot less trouble to order, mix, and dose. They also have instructional videos and comparisons, etc which also help. With larger tanks, it is sometimes more economical to try and find the specific items in Randy's piece. You may also want to pick up some Kalk from them as well. It mixes up a lot easier than the pickling lime in the grocery store which in my area is no longer sold.

Ok, since were talking supplements this is what i currently dose. (Calcion) ingredients are as follows purified water, calcium chloride. (Magnesion) ingredients are purified water, magnesium sulfate, magnesium chloride. I know alkalin 8.3 will no longer be used we have discussed that. I will check out BRS. I already have a gift card from Marine Depot so is there any decent kalk that would work? And, as far as what I am currenly dosing are these good supplements to use? As you can tell, I currently use the Brightwell line because there highly concentrated. I sometimes use PH+ ingredients are purified water, inorganic corbonate salts.

They all seem fine. Most of the last 10 years, I have been using Mrs. Wages Pickling lime, it just doesn't mix up as easily as the more pure varieties. I am usually trying to find the reasonable price with as few issues as possible. I would just always know what the ingredients in anything that you are using.
When you see something that doesn't show up in any competitor's product, you will always want to find out why. Brightwell as I understand it, is a top tier company that makes great products, but like everything else; if you can't measure it, don't dose it.

I went down to my LFS today and bought some kalk. I went with two little fishies since its a pretty well known product. From what the instructions sate it will increase the calcium and maintain alkalinity. The baking soda will increase the alk right?

Correct, except kalk increases or maintains both depending on how much you dose, but always in balance. Though if you dose too much the PH will go to high and it all precipitates out. So you want to dose very slowly. Usually with make up water as you evaporate or by very slow drip. If you haven't used it before, take it slow and be careful not to put a container of this over your tank like I did once...it wasn't pretty. Also, don't breath any of this stuff in as you are mixing it.

I added some kalk tonight since my calcium was low it was around 400. The directions said to add 1 to 2 teaspoons for 1 gallon of water. I added a little less then a half a pint to the tank. I only put about a teaspoon and a quarter in because i didnt want to overdue it. Lets see what i get for test results tomorrow.

Its always good to be testing PH (tank) on this when you first start dosing.

Right. I'll see what it is tomorrow. You think i should keep dosing until things get more stable or a least until my calcium gets back up to around 430-450. I will test cal,ph,and alk.

So what is your calcium and alkalinity and we can figure it out? Also, what is your actual amount of water in your system?

I'm doing algaefix too. I am not very patient. Granma thinks the bubbles in the cyano are so pretty...I don't.
