Cycle

Just picked up the first part of my package on Wednesday...

First I want to say WOW.... The life on the rocks is amazing. My daughter and I have spent hours just looking at the rock. I do have a question though...I've been watching the tank closely and I havent notice any kind of significant ammonia spike. The first day (Thursday morning) I had a test that was borderline 1ppm. I did a water change and haven't see another spike since. My readings (I'm checking twice a day) have been consistently at .5ppm and this evening it was even lower. This is my first saltwater tank. Is this normal?

Pics attached...tank is a 24g nano

It is not typical of SW tanks in general, but because the rock is shipped in water and the die-off can be minimized, it is not uncommon for there to be a smaller cycle with the TBS package. Especially if it has had a week or two in Richard's holding tanks. Still, keep an eye on it for a couple weeks from the time you get it at least. It can take that long or more.

Pics....cool
Its the rule here ;)

First things first......the rock is amazing. My 4 yr old daughter has spent the last two nights in front of the aquarium finding 'new' things instead of watching TV. Awesome!!

Second....I think I might have jumped the gun alittle bit. This morning the ammonia test was high. Did a water change and pulled the rocks for a little sniff test. Found the offending rock and more specifically a sponge that a pretty strong ammonia funk to it. Got it all cleaned up. We will see from here.

Can't wait for part 2 of the package!!
