Cycled rocks?

Hi,
I have some live rocks(dead now) which sat in the sun for 2 months, they all turn white. Now I want to use them in my refugium, can I cycle them in just the ro/di water to get rid of the smell then use or do I have to cycle them in salt water?

give them an acid bath to remove phosphates. 1:1 of vinnegar or 1:10 of miriatic acid (1 part of acid : 10 parts of water). Then rinse them well. I recently did this to 50 lbs of dry rocks, rinsed them in dishwasher (no soap). I was amaized how much cr@p was pulled from inside of the rocks. There is a thread somewhere on chemistry forum about giving acid bath to dry rocks.

.... after all, just to be on the safe side: put them in saltwater and check for ammonia in a few days.
