Cycling new 90 Reef

Hello everyone. I have a new 90 gallon reef I have started up, I am using 110 lbs dry rock, about 90 lbs dry sand and I made my own salt water with my RODI unit and Red Sea Coral Pro Salt mix. It has been running for a couple days just to get the water cleared up from me putting the sand in wrong and making the tank way cloudy. Now my question is when it comes to the cycle of the new tank i was going to use Bio-spira and a shrimp. Is that the correct way to do it? What should I do? i really want to get the cycle going but want to make sure I am doing it right. Please let me know what i should do. I have the bottle of Bio-spira but have nit purchased the shrimp from store yet.

I never use the bio-spiro stuff

you can get the piece of shrimp from deli at grocery store. you do not want a live one.
the other option is yo use ammonia

That will work fine. You can also dose ammonia instead of using the shrimp.

Do yourself a favor and get some real rock. Especially where you are - order 5 or 10 lbs from Rich at Tampa Bay Saltwater at a minimum. Worth its weight in gold.

im on the 10th day of my tank cycle. 40G with 35lbs of dry rock, 19lbs of live sand. second day i added about half the big bottle of bio spira, ghost fed the tank with pellets then added the rest of bio spira the next day and ghost fed tank again with pellets. then i waited a couple days and ghost fed again....my ammonia has been at zero since day 2-3 and nitrites finally dropped to .1 yesterday, nitrates have been around 15 since day 3-4 so im almost there...probably a couple more days and ill be good. seems like the bio spira and live sand worked great for me
