i have a 29gal bio with base rock and a bare bottom, i dont want to add a damsel if i can, just wondering how to get the cycle going i have added food and even a dead fish but i have had nothing but stinky water what else can i do?

Can you take water from your 210 to start the 29? Remove the dead fish and start with water from an estabilished tank should speed things up. When ever I need to start a qt tank I just use water out of my display and then let it run, you should not see any big spikes. I will even get coraline growth in the qt after a few weeks of changing water out and replacing with water from the display.

stinky water is part of cycling if you do not have any biological filteration established prior like setting up a tank with dry base rock only.

You will need some test kits to determine what stage of cycling you are in, I would recommend Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate test kit.

You will see an ammonia spike first followed by Nitrite spike and finally nitrate. Nitrates will read positive when you have nitrites
so wait until you read 0 or close to 0 reading of nitrite before testing for nitrate.

If you have started with base dead rock, I would take out the dead fish since base dead rock will contain dead materials in it to start the cycle anyway, you can keep the dead fish in there but it will prolong your cycle.

Since you have no livestock in that tank, there is no need to do water change until you read low to no nitrites. Let me know or call me if you have any other questions. The whole process can take up to a month depending on how much dead materials are in the tank.

yeah i added a hand full of live sand and some lr to the water and a 5 dollar fish but i have not seen him so im not sure whats up? i will test it tonight

The absolute best thing I have ever used for instant start is turbo start. I jump started my entire 300 gallon aquarium directly to the end of the cycle by using this stuff. It was critical that it worked as well since I was moving over thousands of dollars in saltwater fish. They sell the stuff at Adams Aquatics. Haven't found it anywhere else.

so its looks like its cycled i think i have this brown looking stuff growing everywhere in the tank on the bottom and glass and on the rocks its not real thick or anything like algae but not sure what else it could be?
