Cycling with no big spikes

I've been cycling my tank for the past month (I don't have the exact date with me at the moment but started a spreadsheet at home to track water parameters and take notes)

I used frozen shrimp to get things going, leaving them there in a cheese cloth for about 2 weeks, then took them out and have been ghost feeding flakes daily since. About a week and a half ago I tested my water parameters and still got 0 amonia, but did get a reading for nitrates (around 9). Yesterday morning I did another test and had a very small reading of amonia, as best a possible with red sea colour tests, and 5 for nitrates. I should mention that last week I added some purigen phosphate and nitrate control to the sump. I went ahead and did a 30% water change yesterday, planning on checking parameters on thursday/Friday this week.

Also, i've had some really low alkalinity levels since I started testing (half of what it should be, 2.6meq/l) using red sea coral pro, anyone else have similar issues. I will dose if necessay, but could low co2 levels in the room affect alk as it does pH (heard opening a window can affect ph.

Could my tank have cycled, I only used dry rock and sand, and find it odd that it would happen this fast. No algae bloom yet, but I don't have lights on the tank, so that help reduce algea.

Would I be good to go adding a couple of fish next week? The plan is to start with fish only then add some softies after 3 months or so, maybe a paly.

Very confused, much different results from my freshwater tank cycling time.

I'm very new so take my advice for what's it's worth...my first tank is still cycling. .. but if u added a small amount of pure ammonia to say somewhere between 1-2ppm...u should see a conversion to Nitrite then Nitrate within a 24 hr period...I believe at this point u could consider yourself cycled.

Did u add any bacteria additive? Seachem? Bio Spira?

I didn't add any "live" bacteria. I read the pure among a test but have found any step by step direction regarding this. I wanted to ask questions about this in my original post and forgot, thankso for reminding me.
How much to add, for about 55 gallons (40g display with 20great sump, with some head room). How long after adding should I test amonia, to get a starting point/reading, then after 24th test again for amonia and nitrate.

I forgot to mention the alkalinity. It is a bit low but I would wait until your cycle is completed and the tank to be stable for a few weeks to really concerned about.

I dosed 7.5ml in my 80 gallon which got me right around 2-3ppm initially. I waited about 25 minutes before testing. I dosed 2.5ml 3 times to get to my number all in the same night.

I then added Seachem Stability as per the bottles instructions. I'm on day 6 and ammonia is down, nitrites up and I'm also seeing nitrates. I've continued dosing Stability every day to build my bacteria.

Hope that helps!

the link should be of some use for the pure ammonia. When I do ammonia I give it a hour or so to circulate to get a baseline then test daily until it goes down.

Did you start out with live rock or dead? If it was live rock then it is possible to have processed the ammonia fairly quickly.

Great link thanks, I'll be heading to the lfs on the weekend as planned, but not for fish. I'll pick up some seachem stabilizer and will do the among a test this friday.

There was no reason to do a water change or add Purigen. A little dirty water is fine for cycling. You might look up Dr. Tims for advise and products on adding ammonia if that is the way you want to cycle.

I had done a water change thinking it may have cycled but then started to doubt myself. The purigen was premature I agree but got excited and needed to do something and waneed to limit the nitrogen spike, better that than coral and fish I guess. I figured if I dose among a and see the levels drop in a 24h period it had cycled (regardless of nitrate level)
