Cycling

well personally id shut it down, and get the rock and powerheads at least to start, if you havent got the money then save up and do some research, we would all be happy to give you a check list of kit to get, you will need to spend some cash though, unavoidable im afraid

so what can i use my tank for at the moment anything at all.
i dont think there is anything wrong with your tank, just the CC you dont need,

and you need to add some LR and skimmer and of course flow and you are good to go

the large particles enable detritus like uneaten food and dead hermits etc plus algae spors and other things to settle between the particles, after a while it will raise the nitrate levels in the tank, for a fish only and if vaccuumed regually it would be ok as it does aid the ph, but for a reef its a disaster waiting to happen as corals and sensitive inverts like shrimps wont tolerate high levels, you will also get lots of algae and the look of the tank will be horrible, best to avoid it if you can and go for a decent sand bed

If i was to just see how it went is it possible to change to sand easy or very hard.

it can be changed later of course, but in my opinion its makes no sence, because you have been running just a week and have no filteration you have nothing to lose, whatever you decide, i wish you the best of luck and hope to see some pictures in the near future:)

I don't think crushed coral is that bad. I have it in my tank but it is not a reef. It is easier to clean than sand. Tunzes are not cheap but are good pumps. Another alternative is a Maxijet power head with sureflow mods to boost there output and much less expensive. Add the live rock and find a reputable LFS with knowledgeable people.

I read and learn alot from RC. I spent 2 months just read books from library and online with different forums. I found some different or contrary ideas for the same issue. Like substrate: DSB, SSB or bare bottom. Your mistake is jump-in and not well-prepared. Most go with either one but NOT CC. Good Luck

fishwonder im a trial and error person.
I like to learn from my mistakes.
At school i loved practical and hated theory.
We are all diffrent we all do thing in diffrent ways if we all did it the same how boring would life be.
