I have the opportunity to possibly pass on my older D50. I've been looking at the current models, and they've gotten quite confusing since I purchased my D50. What's the best bet for reefkeeping (normal and macro shots), as well as everyday?

The D50 was a great beginner camera, very simple to use and I paired with the sigma 105mm macro lens mounted on the tripod 24/7. Sorry, I don't have any experience with the models you mentioned.

The D90 will be announced within a few weeks, according to Thom Hogan. It will likely be the cheaper sibling of the D300, which I have and which is a fantastic camera, same way the D80 was the cheaper sibling of the D200. I would consider waiting for that announcement to see if it is in your price range.

The D60 is the replacement for the D40x I think.

Check www.bythom.com for information on Nikon stuff or www.nikonians.org

You'll get a better camera if you put the "D" on the other end of the model name.

.i.e. 30D, 40D, 5D, 1D, etc.....

Possibly with the exception of D3 and D300. :)

Canon was plagued with early with focus problems on the 10d and especially on the 20D with the 30d and the 40d they are now having issues with camera lock up...

I was a faithful canon shooter,

Switched to Nikon about 1 year and a half ago. Both companies produce awesome products don't let anyone tell you that one compnay is better then another, it is simply not true

best pro sumer camera out there rigth now is hands down the d300 and best pro body is the d3.. no argument...

I know a couple iDsMKIII shooters that would argue that point. ;)

But yes, any DSLR on the market right now will take excellent pictures when used properly. That's why I generally recommend that the person just buy what feels the best in their hand.

OP, IMO, you wont get much benefit trading from the D50 to a D40, D40x or D60

for an upgrade go D80

The question is, is it a significant enough of a jump? I'm attempting to interpret all the spec changes now ;)

Yes, the jump to D80 from D50 would be a significant jump as it is a slightly stripped down version of a D200. The D90, I think, would be an even bigger jump. I'd wait a few weeks and see what the price on the D90 will be . . .

I strongly suggest you actually hold whatever you are looking for in your hands to get a feel for the camera. Test the weight and the locations of all the bells and whistles. Like I said I used to use a Nikon FTN and the weight difference between the FTN and the D80 was considerable. Go to the camera store and test drive several different makes and models before deciding.
