Hello,
so I have an angelfish in QT . when I got her, she had some missing parts on her back fin, and the side ones. [I know there is abetter name than side fin but you get what I mean ... ]

2 weeks in and they havent healed yet.

any advice ?

they dont look infected or anything, but the cut on the side one is kinda large making it even look like 2 .... the fish swims fine and eats fine as well though ...

I've read Nitrofuracin Green Powder is supposed to be good for these kind of situations; where the fish has "damage" but it's not infected (yet). No first hand experience with this medication though.

thank you, ill try to get some and have it in hand in case .

saltwater fish dont get fin rot though right ?

I think I remember that from freshwater days.

They do. It can be a bacterial infection (usually gram positive, so erythromycin would likely take care of it). But it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between that, and just damaged/broken fins.

okay so it seems like something is eating its fin away ... I could only take pics of the back fin ...

thoughts ?

Looks like a mild case of fin (tail) rot. Almost any antibiotic should take care of it. API erythromycin or something like Kanaplex. You can even use f/w Maracyn (just double the dosage for s/w use).

which one is the least harsh one in your opinion ?

Erythromycin/Maracyn by far is the gentlest antibiotic out there. Furan-2 is on the other end of the spectrum. I'm testing out Kanaplex right now, and so far so good.

yea never had good experience with Furan 2 neither.

how do you use the Maracyn in QT ? it will probably kill my biological filter, so can I use Prime with it ? I guess daily water changes of 25% and daily dosage of the antibiotics ?

Never had problems with Maracyn/Erythromycin and a bio filter. In fact, erythromycin is the active ingredient they used to use in Chemiclean. However, I believe they've now changed their formula.

ok thank you, found this and will be picking it up tonight.

one more question ... ever used prime with it ?

I have used prime in this QT tank, so need to know if its safe.

have Emailed API as well.

That I don't know. I've only been brave enough to (successfully) use Amquel w/Prazipro; and that's about it. But I've even stopped doing that after reading some anecdotal accounts of bad interactions.

If you got her like that and she is eating, I would just keep the water crystal and feed the heck out of her...if it gets worse then medicate...don't use Prime with any ammonia binding agent...my first thought was that her tail got clipped by the water mover but then reread and saw he bought her like that, they can be timid fish and it looks to me like somebody was picking on her...

thanks Ted. yea she is acting normal in every other way. so I will continue with doing more water changes and feeding her more . see how it goes. will update here.

thanks.
