damaged zoas

I received an order of zoas yesterday and they were shipped in moist paper towels and a couple of heat packs. Looks like the paper towel stuck to some 10 or so polyps and tore some of the polyps. Question is what should I do, can they heal from that kind of damage? Should I remove the damaged polyps if so how? Thanks in advanced for your reply and Merry Christmas to all.

if the polyps are loose then just try attaching to another rock/ rubble with a dab of super glue gel. if the are still attached to the rock just put in low flow area until the reattach on there own.
ps: if you have alot of critters you my want to use a basket of some type (the type strawberries come in works well) to keep the critters off the polyps until they attach.
good luck........al

I shipped them to her. Seems to me they'll pull through but here's the pics to see what you think I'm by no stretch a zo expert. In fact I don't even think I've ever looked this close at a zo! (probably the only one in this forum!) If the number of polyps she requested doesn't make it I'll try to ship her some more. Some had more than that number so I might be alright but please give us some opinions.

Quanity of 30 - 60 hour UNI-Heat Heat Packs with free Priority Shipping. They are great for outdoor activities or use in shipping Fish, Reptiles, plants or anything else that requires heat.

Description: 60 HOURS HEAT PACK ACTIVATE IN APPROX. 15-30 MINUTES. IT IS THE MOST POPULAR TYPE FOR REPTILES, AMPHIBIANS, SMALL ANIMALS AND INSECT SHIPPING. THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE AVERAGE IS 110 DEGREES AND IS 145 DEGREES AT ITS PEAK. IT RELEASES STEADY TEMPERATURE AND PEAK OUT BETWEEN 25 TO 28 HOURS.

 Holy whaazoo batman, yes that temperature peak say 145 degrees.

Part of the process of getting white paper towels involves a bleaching bath by the manufacturer. I would highly suggest paper towels not be used to keep any animal moistened, especially for shipment.

the chlorine would evaporate, if not use wet newspaper. I have had both dry forms in shipping before and never a problem. I will also shy away from an online vendor that will not ship this way because of all of the success I have had VS wet shipping. I also do overnight not 2 day.
The heat was your problem.

and then.....
And now there is basically nothing left.:(

Beashay,
IME, zoas (even very diseased zoas) do not disappear cleanly off of a rock that quickly. I would be willing to bet you have something in your tank that is eating them. I recieved a frag of zoas that looked worse than yours about 2 months ago, and although they still do not look happy, 90% of the polyps are still there. What kind of fish are in your tank? I had an Angel in my tank at one point that made my zoas disappear just like that...And believe me, they will do it without you seeing them. It took weeks of my zoas dwindling before I actually caught my Angel.

The fish I have are as follows.. Scorpas Tang, a pair of percula clowns, yellow tailed damsel, green chromis, three stripped damsel and a mandarin dragonet. I also have 4 peppermint shrimp and 1 cleaner shrimp. I have three good size colonies of zoos and two smaller colonies and a few frags that nothing has bothered. When the package came in it was very warm inside the plastic bag, warm enough that I actually jerked my hand back out of reaction to the warmth of the paper towel inside. There was also a strong smell that I was hoping was just warm rock smell. I dont believe they were damaged I believe they were dead when they got here. There were two 60 or 65 hour heat packs inside a box that was maybe 10x10x11 that had styrofoam insulation there was newspaper wrapped around the heat packs and the zoas were sitting on top of it. I think that the two heat packs just created a steam effect in the plastic bag with the moist paper towel and killed the zoas. The paper towel was stuck to some of the polyps and you could see orange spots on the towel, where some of the color of the zoas came off. Heat packs that was the culprit.

If the zoas were shipped in a box without adequate protection from the cold and the heat pack, it is possible that they could have froze or boiled.
Froze in the low temps of a non pressurized air cargo hold, or boiled from not being properly insulated from the heat pack.

Paper towel shipping has never been a problem for me. It works.

The reason the colony disappeared is because it was dieing The rotting material was probably eaten overnight by Bristle worms and pods. They're opportunistic feeders.

Like someone else mentioned, kudos to the guy that shipped them, he seems like a stand up guy. If he sends them to you again, then I would recommend using him again and would recommend he sharpens his packing skills. :D

The rest of this story should be handled in PM imo.;)
