damsel in distress

i set up a 12 gallon nano yesterday with lr and 2 damsels 1 is ok the other is laying on the gorund breathing heavy, ph is high so is nitrite every thing else is ok , what should i do?

You set it up yesterday! The tank needs to cycle before you add anything, yes damsels are hardy but i sure wouldnt expose them to toxic levels that the tank is exposed to during the cycle. I would get them out. The cycle can take up to 6weeks usually.

Also damsels will get mean when they get a little size, and will not let you keep more timid fish.

If you can not get the fish into another established tank, make sure that you are aerating the water and you may need to do some water changes if your ammonia levels are up. The water changes may slow your cycle (opinions vary), but will help keep your fish alive.

BTW - what you are experiencing in your tank now is probably the result of die-off on your live rock.

When it come to LFS - Trust...but verify. Not all LFS employees are created equal.
 
In any case using damsels for cycling is not all that wonderful. Get a piece of shrimp and stick it in the tank. You will cycle just fine.
