Dana...I want to see the...

neat. That's totally the type of jawfish I was thinking of getting. That's actually how I found out about yours. I asked at the CR if they had any jawfish or were getting in any spotted ones and they said you'd just picked one up.

I'm glad he's still in there. I'm also glad you've covered your tank. It is very important to keep these guys in a tank that's covered (completely)!

I got a chance to see him today and he was very cool looking. He was brave enough to keep his head out of the hole but didn't venture around the few minutes I was visiting and dropping off the cube. I tried to take a pic, but had no better luck with my cheap camera. Here is the least fuzzy shot:

Very nice tank setup, by the way. I was impressed with the basement sump/filtration and how quiet everything was in the living room.

if you don't mind sharing what's a. Good looking jawfish like that run these days. I was gonna get 1 awhile back but it was 129.00 and I was broke at the time.

hey scott, you're pic came out much better than the bunch that i took. glad you liked the setup...especially the sea clone, eh? its really kicking butt. haha! it'll be even quieter when i get around to insulating the pipes and enclosing them with the shelving.

but bad news. he didn't make it. i'm not sure what happened. shortly after you left, somewhere around 10-11a...i went to check on him, and he was actually out and swimming near the surface. i watched him for a few minutes, and it turned out that he was trying to swim, but was more being thrown around in the current. he ended up laying on his side for a while, then managed to get behind a couple rocks. there was a crack where i could see him...and he stayed there all day. around 5p i tried squirting water at him with a baster, and he didn't move. damn. i'm really disappointed. he was such a cool looking fish.

eyebedam, i think he was right around there...i'm not for sure cause i got a couple other things at the same time...

:(

Tough luck Dana... :(

You're still running that seaclone on there??? I though you'd found another skimmer???

haven't gotten another one yet, randy. i just got the reimbursement check from the ER today. the search has continued.

i'm really sorry to hear about your friend, scott. that's really stinks. you hanging in there ok?

thanks, donna, i'm really disappointed about him...but scott's news kind of keeps things in perspective.

Interesting...

I had no idea that their survivorship was so low. Dana, have you considered that the pearly ones are also really cool and that they have much better likelihood of surviving? I'm now thinking about a pearly one. They are super cute as well. It's not like it's even that common to have a pearly jawfish. I mean...I can think of hardly anyone who's got one.

Sorry about your loss. Was the coolest fish that i have seen in a while. Other than cee crazy expensive wrasse

Thanks, Dana. Feel free to feel bummed about your fish, though. I felt that way with my two carpet surfers over the last few years (a flame hawk and a pearly jawfish). This board is for talking about such things. My friend's death is a different class of things. Death is a part of life. It should be a time to reflect on your own life, not a time to forget about your hobby or your other friends. I am an emotional person by nature (my wife is the "Clint Eastwood" of emotions in our family) and am sure to shed more than a few tears today, but I am still looking forward to the funeral today -- it will be a celebration of this faithful man's life as much as it will be saying goodbye to him and supporting his family. I can't imagine what his wife and son are feeling right now -- I try not to think too deeply in that direction.

As to fish, I recommend a pearly jawfish. As long as your tank is, you may be able to safely put in three or four if you like and watch them interact. Here is a link to the LiveAquaria site for them:

ygpm...

and yeah, my son said before that the blue-spotted was nice, but he liked the pearly one better. now i'm getting "i told you so," from my 11 yo.

i really like the flame hawks too. its cool how they watch everything that's going on. but they're not reef safe, are they?

we'll miss you today...

Flame Hawks eat ornamental shrimp which is why they are not reef safe... They're fine with corals and other fish...

I started asking a bit about the blue spotted jawfish in the marine fish forum, and here's some more neat info. Apparently, it actually appears to be a temp issue with the blue spotted ones (someone at the mtg this weekend mentioned this, I think). They are similar to Catalina Gobies in that they are collected from cooler waters. So they need cooler temps in the reef tank and if you keep them at warmer temps they seem to be a lot more delicate.

I have had one for over a year now and the only issue I have had was fishing him out of my overflows on 3 different occasions. I have since fish proofed them with gutterguard and he has established a permanent burrow front and center so he can keep an eye on everything. Very inquisitive fish. I spot feed him with a turkey baster to make sure he gets plenty to eat and he actually swims out and bites at the baster. Hilarious. I hope you have better luck with whatever you decide to go with next.
