Dark Lord Corals - A Review

WOW! I just got back home (thanks Jose) from Dark Lord Corals and was overwhelmed by the number of corals (mostly LPS) that I wanted to buy. They had tons of rare micros and acans that I had never seen before, some beautiful ricordia and zoanthids, and a number of other spectacular things. Their 500 gallon display tank is worth the trip by itself.

I am heading back on Sunday to pick up another frag or two and just can't wait.

All that being said, probably the best part was interacting with Elizabeth who runs the shop out of her basement with her husband. She is knowledgeable without being arrogant and just plain nice.

The prices for the normal stuff were spectacular and the rare acans and micros are beyond fair.

Right now they are by appt only but they are very flexible, I just called on Monday and was able to stop that night. Once they are completly up and running they are going to have set evening hours and weekend hours.

They are supposed to have their fish system running by this weekend & the coral vats within the next week or two. I can't wait til their in full swing, it will be nice to have a great store on the south side.

Their "rare" stuff in unbelievable!!!

I want their display tank!

They are located in Brookfield off of I55.

THey are located in brookfield, not really that far for city people and not that far from west suburb people, their operation is run out of their basement. The website will be functional soon but for now they are by appointment only, I think Adam can give you guys a phone number and then you can set up your own appointments. Elizabeth is the nicest owner i have ever met, i bet her husband is the same way. Even though it was late she never really hurried us to get out and there was no pressure whatsoever with anything. If im not mistaken the frag tank is 75 gallons and that huge display is 500. Such beautiful lps pieces, i will buy all my acan and micros from them when i get going again with a reef. I might buy a fish from them sooner than later, they are checking the price for me ;)
This is my favorite place as of now and its not even a store front.

They sent me an email with the price on that fish, Jose, and it is a great one ... I will give you a call. Their number is (708) 485-0666.

Brookfield is right by work and I've seen their stuff on frags.org, but I've never stopped by.

My worry is that I stop by there, browse for an hour and then decide on nothing. Not a big deal when it's a LFS, but taking time from someones day so they can meet with you is a whole 'nother animal..

I go into other stores and look and don't buy stuff. I talk with employees and hang out. Same here, they are running a business be it out of their home or a store front. I think most people will agree that it's never a waist of time, we all love this hobby and it's par for the course. JMO

I have a friend that drove all the way up north to a shop & most of their corals had green hair algae on them & felt bad not buying anything, so he bought a tube of glue. He said none of the corals had been dipped either... He talked to someone else the next day that had just stopped in there & he bought the same thing!

What store, I need to make sure I stay away from there! I finally got rid of mine :D

I really don't like to publicly badmouth anyone or any store, unless they have personally treated me badly. I'm sure more feedback is to come.

Gotcha ;)

Getting back to the point, I don't think it wouldn't be waisting anyones time! If you don't find something one time there will always be a next time.

I'd love to do what they do, it would be great to be able to meet people on a regular basis who share the same passion as we all do!

Gent, I wouldn't worry about visiting them and not buying. Mike and Elizabeth are reefers first and business people second. ;)

I'm sure it will be harder for you to leave without wanting to buy something..... It's definitely worth the visit! :)

Going into a store and not looking to purchase is one thing. My hang up is making an appointment, asking them to take time from thier day and then walking out. The term is "C-Tease" (trying to keep it clean), and I'm sure no one likes that...

BUT.. FiberLux may have convinced me otherwise.. Just going to have to save up some cash for the killer acans they have. Thier website looks like it's ready for a big launch, and thier frags.org listings are usually top notch. Not only that, everyone who visits raves about them.

...I bought our Indigo Dotty from them.. and can ditto the recomendations. When I visited them back in march or april, they were just starting to set up the "big" system. I should stop by and check it out. I'm glad to see they got the revamped web site working.

When I went by there a year or so ago, all they had was a small frag system & a vat of LR. I'm so happy to hear they're taking off so well! I almost died, seeing that fantastic display tank in their livingroom! It sounds like it's much bigger now. Almost got me thinking about acans...

Their living room tank is nothing compared to downstairs at this point. It is definately worth another look! I am heading back on sunday.

Liked their site cool web page
