Darth Mauls

I got some Darth Mauls about 3 weeks ago & can't seem to find out a spot where they will open up fully. I've had other zoas & put them at the bottom to adjust, then move them to a spot where they really expand. Most of the time it's mid to lower levels.

Im not sure if these are just small to begin(babies) with or they just need a long time to adjust?

Any suggestions?

I have had mine nearly a year...and I have gone from 3-5 polyps. They took a long time to start growing, they were just tiny things when I got them. Other people say they grow like crazy.

Also keep in mind, my tank is doing very poorly....this is one of the few corals I have that looks good.....so not sure why I am even offering advice!

FYI everyone tank is different in many different ways. I got a 1 polyp frag in 4 months ago and they are growing like wide fire. In the space of 4 months period, I place the frag in the middle of the tank and now i have 9 heads of dm's. So keep your frag in one location where it can get the right nutrition and lighting to grow.

... and if you keep moving it around in short periods of time you'll never know if that spot is a good one for the colony. I would say that if they are open and looking healthy just wait and they will grow/reproduce. Most zoas have pretty good adaptation skills, but they need time to adjust to the new environment, your tank.

Most darth mauls are deep water zoas/palys. I have gotten a couple for next to nothing because they need to be kept in little to no light to acclimate them to our lighting. If not they melt within days.

They are funny . I have some on my top rack and open up and extend toward the lights and then I have had some melt away right next to them. I have learned to start them low and move them up and they will acclimate nicely.
Also sometimes a high Salinity will melt them. over 1.026 I have seen it but I guess it just depends a little on the lucky side with these.

I have other zoas that have done fine. These weren't opening at all for 3 weeks. I know it takes time for zoas to adjust & grow, but they have to eventually open up. I only moved them twice............after two weeks on the bottom in direct light they never opened. I moved them to mid level for a week & they wouldn't open there either.

I moved them to an area that is actually in the shade & not getting direct light the day I posted this thread & they opened up the next day. I'll leave them there now & let them extend out into the light if they choose to.

Darths are finicky and will be great one time then all melt on the other. mine and a few other freinds had them all met on us.

My darths arent really finicky, but they don't grow whatsoever. I've had the same 2 polyps since January. I have a 120w led unit right now and they are in low flow medium light.

Mine have been very stubborn for the last few months since I've added them... They actually have reproduced, but I think I jus have too much light for their liking... They did best when they were on a frag rack directly under another one and they were shaded... Less flow there too...
