dc skimmer

Ignoring the large "fad/cool kid" aspect of it...

I suppose it just gives another method of tuning the performance of the skimmer some.

I had a DC skimmer never had use for the turning it down but the motor was silent. That would be the selling feature for myself.

my skimmer was producing so much foam, I had to turn the motor down to the lowest level even with output wide open. with ac motor, I would have to turn the skimmer off.

Or adjust it other ways.. Raise height.. close/open exhaust,etc... like we have been doing years before DC pumps were around.. ;)

But yes.. having the ability to just press a button to do that may be more convenient.. Not sure if its "better" though as it might have been more efficient and capable of producing finer bubbles at the higher speed

When I thought that the pump on my skimmer was going, I was considering a DC pump simply because the manufacture is no longer in business to advise me on a correct replacement pump and the exact replacement pump is redonkuliously expensive so it would allow me to tune the pump to the skimmer. For a company which has the R&D recourses to appropriately match a pump to a skimmer body I think the DC pump thing is more of a gimmick than a necessity. YMMV.

it was convenient. I was moving some corals and the slime caused the skimmer to go nuts. so its a temporary adjustment. I suppose there is no compelling reason to choose one over the other. I just want an all DC tank (except for heater), mainly for energy efficiency.

I think strictly speaking, the so called dc pumps are really highly efficient and controllable ac pumps.
it has safety features like over current, run dry protection that is not available on common ac pumps, not to mention soft start.

I think for vectra pump, they program a few more features that can be useful in certain situations.

sure ac pumps works just fine, so does churning your own butter.
