Mysterybox,

Thank you for your post and patience in waiting for our response. Our Aquaculture Coral and Marine Life Facility reports that at this time we don’t have any Diver’s Den Halichoeres melanurus, iridis, ornatissumus, however they will work on obtaining some Halichores.

Our Wrasse section on our LiveAquaria Site does have some of the specimens you are looking for. You may view them here.

Please let us know if you have further questions, as we enjoy helping our customers.

OK, talked me into it! I got a med sized male Halichoeres melanurus. coming in tomorrow AM!

Should I gut pack live brine with metro? or just selcon?

Thanks!

mysterybox,

Thank you for your post. When first introduced to the aquarium, the Halichoeres melanurus should first be given live feeder shrimp. To enhance their nutritional value, we recommend gut-loading the shrimp with Selcon or Cyclop-Eeze. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to let us know.

As you know, I ordered the Medium sized Male, but from the pictures can you tell me if this is a male that I received? If not, I don't want any credit for the record, just an FYI!

Sincerely,
Ralph Scheriff

Mysterybox,

Thank you for your post. We sincerely apologize we are not sure if you received a male or female Hoeven's Wrasse. However we will be more than happy to check with our Aquaculture Coral and Marine Life Facility tomorrow morning, and once we have this information available we will post back.

We thank you for your patience in this matter.

my "guess" is that it's an initial phase male. Thanks for the info, either way, it's just for my knowledge!
appreciate your great livestock & service!

mysterybox,

Thank you for your patience. Your new Halichoeres melanurus looks beautiful, and hopefully the fish is settling in well into your aquarium.

Labrids of the genus Halichoeres are protogynous hermaphrodites, and at maturity, these fishes will display initial phase (both males and females) or terminal phase (males resulting from a female sex change) coloration and patterns.

Your new fish is still in the Initial Phase, and the exact sex is very hard to determine. When this species starts changing sex from female to male, the horizontal striped pattern and coloration on the head and face of the fish will gradually start to change to thicker stripes, with a distinct yellow/lime green patch on the upper region of the operculum, and yellow patch or spot at the base of each pectoral fin. During this transformation the fish will also lose the three black spots along the dorsal fin, changing from spots to thick stripes, and the tail will also develop coloration and pattern, going from clear to a blue, red/orange, and green with black vertical band at the outermost part.

I hope you find this information beneficial, and I hope you enjoy your new Halichoeres wrasse.

Cheers!
