itachi and I were at the LFS and saw this flame angel. It looked so different that he just had to have it. (Sorry for blurry photos as it is in his office tank that's small and curbed glass.)

Diana, quit leaving it on the grill for so long! :frog:

John, have you had this one long?

New addition or is this just the first time you've posted it?

That little girl never made it Chelsey... :(

The pattern shown here is probably the most common variant. We refer to it as "tiger".

Ah yes Bill... those "Tigers" also tend to form unusually large harems of females too... :fun4:

Why do I never see the marquesan variant offered? I love those guys.

Simple answer... there is no collection for the hobby there... yet... ;)

Beautiful Peter! I am working on a true Hawaiian flame angel harem for my large reef... if you think finding a true Hawaiian flame is hard... try finding true Hawaiian flame females...

Thank you. I am hoping my xmas island one is small enough, that they will pair. Time will tell.

A few years ago there was a scientific study that looked at the deep red Hawaiian flame. This "variety" is only found in Hawaii and Johnston Island. At tiny Johnston Island this variety is also found with the "regular" variety, the only place their ranges overlap... interestingly the two varieties formed separate harems, with no apparent intermediates... and the study found that it was a result of sexual selection... this was not some obscure study... Rich Pyle himself was one of the authors... :) Pretty neat...

No... the key here is "if given the choice"... I've had a spawning pair of resplendens/fisheri and flavissima/bispinosa... the one and only captive raised joculator Frank did I received paired up with a Centropyge interrupta... once they were placed in my large system that contained wild joculators the joc dumped the interrupta for the wild jocs... I'll soon be placing my flame/rusty hybrid with a Phillipines flame and rusty angel to see what will happen when they grow out...:) Just like humans... fish will settle for less than ideal options if they have no others...
