20 YRS AGO I HAD A VORTEX DIATOM FILTER AND AFTER ITS USE THE WATER WAS AMAZINGLY CLEAR AND THE DE POWDER CAME FROM THE POOL STORE ALTHOUGH YOU COULD BUY VORTEX POWDER. I WOULD IMAGINE THE SAME PRINCIPLE APPLIES TO YOUR REEF TANK BUT TO CLEAN A POOL DIATOM FILTER AND THE PUMP DRAWS ALOT OF WATTS. I LIKE THE IDEA!!
it used to be done a lot... big problem is they get clogged fast. i think they were used as temporary filtration and not always on thus many people didn't buy them (like $100+ too I think) so they dissapeared off the market slowly. It should be fine and i would have one if I ever bastere'd the rock to clean the tank.
