OK - is it a full moon- have had weird stuff happening lately. Today - when my pendant at my office turned on the glass shattered. It is DE so, I know the light is harmful. Should I go with out light over the tank or use it until I can get the glass replaced. Anybody know of anyplace to get the glass replaced int he north hills area. Also how the H*** can I get the pieces of glass out of the tank without cutting my hands.

I would leave the light off until u can replace it. You could try using a net to get out the pieces of glass out of the tank

leave the light off. Some people do 3 day blackouts periodically on their tanks to control algae. Did the glass shatter in tiny pieces or several bigger ones. Use net like stated above or tongs/grabbers that many have for deep tanks.

There was a video on RC a few months ago in the lighting section of an individual who ran his DE halides without lenses (glass) and his fish (that survived) had radiation poisoning. I have been plagued with hair algae and dinoflagellates for about 6 months. After the last PMAS meeting I decided to go without light for 3 days. I am just finishing the 3 day cycle and my tank looks awesome. All the bad stuff is gone and the corals look fine.

Tiny pieces I'm guessing seeing how it is Tempered Glass. At least they usually are. Net out some glass filled sand, and try to sift out the glass. I wouldn't run the light until the glass is replaced. I have a 150watt MH laying around if you want to borrow it. Let me know.

I had this happen to me at the store but with a mogul bulb. It was tempered and shattered into million pieces. Luckily it was a bare bottom tank, so i just used a 3/4" hose and sucked it out and did a water change. Figured that the light didn't need the glass anyways. For your situation you can probably use the hose to suck it out if it is small tempered pieces. Don't stir the sand up too much though if it is a deeper sand bed. For the replacement glass you could probably go to a glass store to cut you a new piece for less than $20 depending on thickness.

There is nothing special about the glass...as stated above, any glass will do. I vote to just bury the glass under more sand. Let the magical powers of the deep sand bed process all your glass and convert it into nitrogen gas and....oh, what? Deep sand beds don't work that way? Nevermind. :)

a few shards of 2 inches and many small pieces, I thought it was special glass= filers out UV or something?? OR will any glass work? went to ADC glass and he was very concerned about heat.

Low Iron or Tempered/UV Glass. Forget the actual name of it. The heat will break normal glass and will not screen any of the UVs. So it'll be like not having it period.

Emailed Aqua medic- they actually responded already and said to measure and tell them the size glass so they could send it and then they could tell me costs. Good customer service - yeah.....
