dead clam, now what

a few nights ago, i did a water change, maybe a 15% one. the next day when i got home from work, noticed that one of my derasa clams had died, only shell left. clam was only 3 -3.5 inches. my tank is a 125 +30ish gallons of water in the sump. since, i have had several zoas not opening and green brain acting funny. i have done a couple 10 gallon water changes since but things still havent opened. all my parameters check out OK including nitrates. any thoughts? are there toxins that could still be in the water from the clam dying. also as a note, i have 2 other similar size derasa clams in the tank and they look fine.

any ideas apprecciated

Wow, Jay. Sorry to hear that.

I don't think clams have any toxins. Zoas are notorious for being unhappy for no apparent reason. I'm not 100% sure that I would personally associate a dead clam and closed zoas, especially if you have other clams.

Maybe you should take a close look at whats left of the clam and see if you see any parasites. Check your other clams, too.

Just a few thoughts. :)

Man, sorry to hear that Jay. Losing a clam hurts worse, to me, than losing any other reef animal/coral/invert. I'm not well versed about pyramid snails, but you may want to look that up for potential cause. Also, try posting on the clam forum. There are some bright folks on there.

zoas still dying!!!!!!

would my new kole tang be doing this? that is the only thing that could has realy changed and i havent really seen him eating that food im feeding????????????
 
Kole Tangs aren't typically known for munching in corals - but I suppose there is always an exception. Are any other corals showing stress other than your Zoas? And I know nothing about clams.
 
All tangs can, and sometimes, do eat polyps. I've had 50/50 odds with Kole tangs eating zoas. Please send me some pics of the polyps, zoas are kind of my specialty.

Also, when your lights are out take a good flashlight and look for nudibrachs. They'll look like tiny porcupines (sp?). Sometimes you won't see them, but when the polyps are closed, you'll see tiny circular, string like design on the mat...those are eggs.

I'm up right now and will be until about midnight if you want to call and try to nail down what might be happening. Take it easy,

ok, so i havent seen the kole tang eating the zoas, however, when i came home today, i sat back and watched as both my blue spot rabbit fish and bicolor foxfaced munched away on them, time to dust off the the old fish trap. do we know where the club fish trap is? i know i can catch the foxface in the 2-liter as i caught him like 5 times not to long ago. the rabbit fish might not be so easy.........
 
Should you know jay. Lol just playing bud. If no one got it from andywe. Then he still has it. I can try and get it from him or you can. Jlmk what your going to do.
 
sad day, had to take my foxface and rabbit fish back to the store. couildnt locate nor did i need the fish trap, had to move a few things but netted both.

pick up the new fish on sunday, hopefully it doesnt eat zoas!
 
Sorry you had to give up two of your fish - but I can guarantee you that you Zoas are cheering that decision!

What new fish did you get?
 
im picking up a powder brown , they just got it yesterday so they are going to hold it for me until sunday to make sure he is good and eating.

PS i also saw your man runnning your erronds, hah
 
I have a powder brown. His name is leroy- leroy brown. He has adhd and sometimes fights himself in the glass he's hilarious.

LOL - my man? He loves running errands to AC - any excuse for him to go there and he's off, believe me... If he comes home with a fish, however, I may kill him! :lol2:
