dead fish

dank tank

New member
Alright so I've had my 55 gallon reef/fish tank for about 6 months and I'm in my junior year in college so money is scarce.

I started off a complete rookie, never did water changes, didn't have the proper equipment, didn't check my water etc.

Over those 6 months I had many corals and fish die, but didn't look much into it besides for the fact I didn't give then tank enough care and I almost decided to give it all up together.

Then I began researching and talking to the guys at my LFS and started putting the pieces I was missing together.

I eventually got my skimmer, poly reactor, got the water in check etc., and the fish continued to die.

The fish would develop white spots all over their body (I assume is ich) and others wouldn't. Some would die within days other would die within weeks. All in all no fish would make it besides my inverts. Most would develop white spots, then the white spots would turn into puffy boils and the fish would eventually die off.

4 weeks ago I took out all of the fish in my tank, and let a buddy hold them in his QT with meds and eventually they all died off. I have a lot of coral in my tank so I could not run the recommended treatments I've heard about in my DT such as the hyposalinity and meds.

Currently I have all my water parameters perfect and the tank has been fishless for 4 weeks.

I am wondering how long will I have to continue to keep my tank fishless? and if there is anything else I can do to ensure the parasite/s that were killing my fish will not be in there when I introduce new fish to the DT.

Anything will help, I've invested so much time and money and I am starting to get my reef looking really nice, and want to stay as far away from another let down as possible. Please help

alright sounds good... anything else I should have in my tank to make it the best it can be. I am trying to grow many coral, any advice is appreciated

Ick is like salt granuals scttered on the fish. I am unsure of what causes the puffy boils.

Right now I am not sure what else to suggest to you. I have had my own set back that has me a bit defeated today.

ammonia - 0
nitrites - 0
ph - 8.2
nitrates - 20 (high need to get them down with another water change)

everything else the LFS checked for me 2 days ago and they said I was on point

Also my octopus protein skimmer isnt bubbling over into the overflow like it usually does after my last water change... is this a problem or should I wait it out..

and no I do not have any fish left, I got a QT tank but they all died from their parasites :/
I had 1 yellow tang, 1 powder brown tang, 1 anthias, 2 percula clowns, 1 coris wrasse, and a goby

i just noticed today my trumpet coral is starting to bleach a bit... I'm really worried. My phosphates were high 2 days ago so I bought a poly reactor and hooked him up.. anything I can do to help this guy recover?

I would do a 40% water change I have done as much as 50% to lower nitrates. What kind of lighting are you using also how old are the bulbs. Also what is you salinity, alk, calcium. First thing I would do is invest in some good test kits I like elos but there are others. Also depends who is testing your water I don't want to use names make sure they specialize in saltwater .

What type of inverts are in the tank? Without fish in there, there is no poop to clean up, and no spare food laying around, so they could turn to eating corals....LPS seem to become meals fairly quickly.

I am using T5s and all my parameters are on point. salinity is 1.023 and i have my coral banded shrimp a couple of blue legged hermits and some snails. All my corals are doing fine besides the torch. I can take a picture later to show you the placement of everything
