I woke up this morning to find, Opie my YWM goby, on his side, on the substrate, dead. Ive had him almost a month. I didnt see him eat much towards the end, but when we got him he ate and was happy. A week ago I purchased a dottyback and returned it to my LFS because he was picking on everything including my Opie. Yesterday opie was out and about moving along the tank feeling free and he seemed fine. I did however notice a nip out of his top fin last night. I just thougt he bumped it on a rock or something.
So after I take him out and examine him in a glass cup, I notice his bottom fin and pelvic (perching) fin, are somwhat shredded. Could something small like in the substrate slowly be eating at him and kill him? Or maybe the new hydroids or jellies ive been spotting? The thing is none of my inverts got to him this morning. Ive read the bad rap on emeralds, but I knew better. We have two, neither were snacking. Also neither of our two, very big, thin striped hermits were munching either. So this makes me sure that none of my crabs killed him. My two pajama cardinals are fine. My two cleaner shrimps, my arrow crab, and all the snails and crabs seem to be fine.
Attached is a picture of Opie after I removed him from the tank. And a picture of literally 12 hours before, when he seemed fine.
I'm not sure there is an answer. But any advice or help would be appreciated.
