dead halemida

hello fellow reefers! i have a problem. I got new bulbs for my tank (ushios), and a new skimmer(g3), other than that no changes have occured in my tank for a very long time. 2 days ago the halemida was fine now its got this on it... is this normal? looks to me like a fungus... but im no expert, all advice welcome, i plan to get some more this weekend. will this stuff affect my whole system i have 2 mangroves, Chaetomorpha and Codium Taylori everythig else seems to be ok.

not sure, but I think it is "going sexual". That is actually little spores it is getting ready to release into your tank. That's bad. Keep it out of the tank and look up info to make sure I'm right. I don't know if it will die back afterwards or just green back up. Either way, halimeda can grow pretty fast if you give it some calcium. I love mine.
 
thanks for reply lula, i did take it out cause i looked closer and noticed that some of the branches were clear and gooey. i put it in a bucket and left it outside to dump later, well this morning it looked like someone had dropped green food coloring in the bucket, the spores melted and turned into a green liquid, and it smells awful, :confused: im soo confused.
 
Yep. Went sexual. That was the spores being released that caused the green water. The problem is when that happens in the tank. It releases all the organic material it sucked out the water back into the tank all at once. I would just look for any firm, viable parts at the bottom of the plant, cut off the bad parts, and replant in the tank. It'll grow back.
