One of my hermits died do I leave it in the tank or how do I get his shell off for the others to use

The others will take care of the dead hermit

The other hermits will eat him and if need be they use his shell if it bigger then theirs.

The other hermits will assist in getting him to the great hermit Valhalla.

IMO, if you can remove it easily, remove it. There's really no point in having something rot in your tank, or feeding the CUC when it really boils down to it.
