Dead rock in new reef.

Hi guys! I startet up a Red Sea Max 6 days ago. I am wondering if I can use some of my old rock from an old crash, with the new. Any ideas?

I am a bit worried that the old rock will cause a algea problem. I put the old rock in the sump an half hour ago, but should I take them out again?

What caused the crash? Was the old rock completely dried out or is there a possibility that ich or other parasites are still alive on the rock? We need a lot more information about the old tank to give you good advice, although the damage has likely already been done if there was disease in the old tank. Old used rock can contain phosphates if your old system was high in phosphates.

The old crash came from a very hot summer. The rock have being lying in a dry location for about two years. It is possible it was a little high phosphate back then. Never had problems with ich in that tank. Hope this clears things out. Thanks for the help so far!

If the rocks are loaded with phosphate, they could leach it back in once wet, but it's hard to know for sure. There can be old dried out dead stuff in there so they may need a bit of curing once they are wet again. Sniff them now and then, if they smell awful they are still curing a bit.

I decided to take the rocks out again. After considering I am spending about 5K on new equipment for the tank, 450 bucks on new rock is worth it. Hoping to much po4 haven't gotten in the water

I like your plan. That was my exact thought the second I read red Sea. My second thought is maybe you got the red Sea second hand and then perhaps u are trying to save....

My current philosophy in this hobby is don't try to skim. Comes back to bite you.

From trusted people or friends relatives second hand stuff could be reliable. I'm no expert on aquariums fish or rocks. I do know that this hobby is big money and so spending a few hundred on safe rocks which will remain for life of tank which costs well beyond double the costs of the startup equipment ....seems reasonable.

Thanks for the answer! I actually bought the tank second hand... But when I set it up I quickly found out that the c-skim skimmer was way to loud, as well with the return pump.

I decided to go for led lighting an bought 2 GHL mitras 6200 and the GHL profilux.

And bought a deltec calcium reactor.

Hoping this will be my best build yet!
