Dead silent return pump 450-600 gph?

Just like the title says, I'm in the market for a dead silent return pump (it's going in the living room, and it won't be in a closed cabinet). It's gotta be in the 450-600 gph range, and it's a big plus if it's energy efficient and affordable as well. Any recommendations out there?

I'm currently considering the Taam Rio+ 1700, or a Tunze Silence model.

velocity/poseidon T1 to T4 pumps are completely silent. I use them at work when I had a tank setup (mind you I own funeral homes) & you do not hear them at all, dead ...... silent.

I use one on my present 210g & I have used them on as small as 90g tanks. I have only used the T4 which probably is closer to 800 gph at 6ft head, the T3 might be better for you. They are I believe $150 ish & pull 120-140w & can/do add some heat to smaller tanks.

Internal/External?

The most silent is Velocity or Poseidon, and they handle pressure pretty well. To get the GPH you want, probably the T2(PS3) at 98 watts.

Eheims are pretty quiet, but the larger ones still have a hum to them. I have a Sicce syncra- which is supposed to be pretty much the same as the Tunze- and it has a slight hum to it, not too bad though.

Thanks for all your replies so far. I probably should have mentioned, I have a VERY LOW head pressure in my situation, as believe it or not, the sump is sitting on the same flat surface as the tank.

As far as energy efficiency goes, I guess it's all relative, but some of you might find it interesting to see how many watts the two pumps I listed are consuming:

Taam Rio+ 1700: 642 gph @ 23 watts
Tunze Silence: 634 gph @ 30 watts

Although this drops off significantly with head pressure, I'm only looking at my situation as having a foot or so..

Anyways, I don't suppose anyone out there has had both of these pumps and could really be able to vouch for their silentness?

i have had the silence for one year now and it lives up to its name. I got it at marine depot last year for $80, on sale maybe? Anyway, its totally worth any extra money the pump costs because its totally hassle free, imo.

This tunze owner recommends - the Tunze (for all the reasons already mentioned).

Well, maybe I will have to go ahead with the Tunze then :)

I was kind of hoping that someone would tell me the Rio would be the quieter option, as it is half the price of the Tunze, and is more energy efficient to boot. But this must be another one of those annoying "you get what you pay for" situations

I'm running the tunze right now. I just got it a couple days ago. It's quiet but has a hum as everyone has said.

It's very compact though so it's easy to fit in the sump. I think it's a bit weak though. I might change it out for a eheim 1260 but I will give it 2 months.

I've had good luck with Rios in the past. But for a truly silent pump, it needs to be external. When the pump is in a sump, the sump will have an amphitheater effect. I'm fighting this problem too. My QO 4000 in the sump is pretty loud. But when I put it in a bucket, it's some what quieter. This is why I've decided to change to a velocity t2 pump. These things are dead silent and are advertised as producing <30db.

As far as the quility of the rios Vs. tunze, that's for the owner to decide. Some like to buy a mercedes for 60K, and others will buy a kia for 15K. They'll both get you from point a to b, but one will get you there in style.
