Dealing with irresponsible buyers of fish

My stories is true I honestly payed 110 bucks for the clowns but if I was to live it over again I would not have payed the 50$ extra because I bet that the family would have given me the clowns for less, they were kind off suspicious of the clowns because someone was willing to pay a lot off money for the fish they thought the clowns were special. The reason I offered them 50$ was that in the heat of the moment I was thinking about how much money I should offer them not to come back, and I thought 50 since it is probably a the most common, if you can call it that, number after 100. As for fishy 1 story I believe it also there is a Koran angel at my lfs that they have had since I joined the fish keeping hobbie and I am sure they would ask for it back had someone sold it. I am okay with you doubting our stories, I can assure you I am not lying, but a admit that they sound a little incredulous. Please keep they stories coming they keep my faith in the aquarium hobby; I mean we're taking these fish out of the ocean the least we can do is give them proper housing

Maybe you should have just explained that those were saltwater fish, that they would die within a couple hours in fresh water, and let them make their own decisions.

They probably took your 110 bucks and went to the next store and bought another pair of nemos.

they probably did and now that i think of it i should have called all the lfs around my town(all are very trustworthy) and told them that they might come, not that they would have listened to me. i think they had just bought the clowns because they were on sale noraly 25$ but they all the fish were on sale so they were 15$

I enjoy playing around with ppl in LFS though ...

some new kids there, or some customers who recently joined the hobby see me buying fish or corals, and feel like they need to comment ... I always tell them the fish is going to be a bag fish ... hung on the wall, till I decide to get an actual tank lol it doesnt last long till the owners and mangers that know me see it and laugh their Arse off ...

none of them have offered to buy the fish from me and pay me 50 bucks though. I gotta move to your area !

LFS DEMANDING return of a fish with no refund ... is like Mcdonalds kicking me out if I show up there 3 nights in a row ... thinking about my health and stuff ... neither would happen lol

MacDOnalds think about your health? *cough cough*overweight America

Im in Canada ...

but yea ... when some guy walks up to me in McD at 2 am, hands me 50 bucks, and tells me to eat something healthier, then Id be like AHH ! fishhumans story was true !

until then ... :)

or if McD calls me at home, at 2:13 am, when I take my pants off and sit down to eat the big mac, and yells at the phone, telling me that big mac is not good for u, and demands me to bring it back to the store and dispose of it ... then .....

This happened decades ago, back in the '80's. I was strolling around the fish store with my boyfriend, and a rich guy came in. He was obviously in a distracted hurry. He just went around the store pointing, buying everything colorful, things that obviously would not survive in the same tank. What really broke my heart was the golden sea horses. The staff tried to talk to him, but he wasn't interested. He planned to. Dump them in when get got home and they just had to look good for the party that night.

What do you do with people like this? People who do not respect the fact that these fish are living things? Since he wouldn't listen to reason, it seemed obvious to the depths of my 20 something year old mind that my boyfriend and I should jump him in the parking lot and rescue the fish. Boyfriend was older than I was, and was either more sensible or a total puss. Either way he talked me out of it. ( " if you do it, I'll never speak to you again!")

That's a tough situation here are something's I have devised that I would say to someone buying a fish they can't take care of
2 most common scenarios clownfish or blue tang
For the blue tang, this would especially work with a child: you know how much dory loves to swim, remember in the movie how she sings just keep swimming, just imagine how confused she would if you put her in that (enter tank size here). I have never tried it as I have never seen a blue tang being sold to a uninformed person.

This happens ALL the time, especially with maintenance companies...tanks are always restocked just before a party/event at a customers home.

how big is your tank ?

Right now it's a 125 with some sps coral that is infested with some pest I forgot the name but I have a dragon face pipefish to get rid of it, however as a summer project I am making a 500 gallon fowlr plywood aquarium.

Very difficult question this, ... what is irresponsible? I read here quite often about people that have bought a certain species of angelfish, CBB, wrasse, Idol, you name it 5 times in a row. Every time ending up with a dead fish within a couple of months.

They often have some excuse (some disease, fish store didn't handle it well, bad luck...) to buy it again. These are experienced fellow hobbyists brave enough to post their losses here, I respect that and never go argue in their threads. But often I think to myself: just don't buy the fish, if you don't care about the money please care about the fish!

So what/who is responsible?

ps: I am no saint either and have some fish considered to be difficult but if a fish dies within months I never buy the same fish again, maybe I will try it again after a year or two when actually something has changed in my tank.

you raise a good point, should we really be buying these fish that are most likely going to die just to say we have if we succeed. What don't like about fish keeping is that it makes you think of a fish as a number an amount of money I know this because before I started the hobby I would cry for hours if one of my pets died once you get into fish the ones that died are just casualties. About a year ago my clown goby died and I remember telling my friend who had noticed him missing that he had jumped out an died; I said like it was a normal thing like losing a dollar, later that night I thought what if someone just came up to you and said your grandma died and you just shrug it off. Ever since then if one of my fish dies I bury it no more inconsiderate flushing for me

Local club member posted a 6-8" Regal angel for sale of the forum. He got it from petco a few days before and his emperor was beating it up. Price was $75 so I rolled the dice. Went to go pick him up and the guy had left the fish in a bucket overnight. Not even the sump, a bucket. Fish was rough, I got him anyways. Got home, had the fish for a few days in a dedicated qt tank. Could not get him to eat anything (large regal from petco yea this is going to work out well) so I had the bright idea of putting a eating fish in with him. Stupid does as stupid sees right (old trick have a eating fish show the non eater how to get things done) so in goes the semilarvatis butterfly. 48 hours late I get my first experience with oodidium. Ended with both dead and be bleaching out 150g worth of tanks.

Did I mention the semilarvatis was the wife's favorite fish to boot.
